With ongoing problems in the Strait of Hormuz, India is now relying on the United States for its gas supplies.
In May, data from Kpler shows the United States surpassed all other countries to become India’s main source of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).
US Gas Fills India’s Gulf Supply Gap
According to CNBC and data from Kpler, the United States sent 630,000 tonnes of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) to India in May. This is about 60% more than the total amount of LPG India received from all countries in the Gulf region combined, which was 380,000 tonnes.
India received 900,000 tonnes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the United States last month, fulfilling over 40% of the country’s total LNG needs. This represents a threefold increase compared to the amount received in April.
Experts note the conflict sped up an existing trend. According to Manish Sejwal of Rystad Energy, high shipping costs were already making it difficult for American goods to compete with those from the Middle East when considering the total cost of delivery.
Sumit Ritolia, lead research analyst at Kpler, expects the realignment to last.
“Going forward, the India–US energy trade will increasingly focus on gas,” he said.

India Counts Its Reserves as the Crisis Drags On
India gets around 60% of its liquefied natural gas (LNG) and almost all of its liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) through the Strait of Hormuz. Recent attacks on Iran by the US and Israel, starting on February 28th, have caused problems for shipping through this important waterway.
In May, Prime Minister Modi asked people to use less fuel and suggested going back to working from home if they could.
India has enough fuel reserves to manage any supply problems for 30 to 60 days, even if shipping through the Strait of Hormuz is disrupted, according to Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri. He explained that the country currently has between 76 and 80 days’ worth of fuel stored in strategic reserves, refineries, and commercial stocks.
It’s unclear if American suppliers will maintain their recent gains, as this likely hinges on how long current disruptions last. Additionally, India anticipates continued growth in gas imports from Mozambique.
