Turn-Based RPG Final Fantasy Resonance Is Not a Port or Remake of Shuttered Gacha Game

Square Enix recently revealed Final Fantasy Resonance, the first traditional turn-based RPG in the Final Fantasy series in quite some time.

This news might be bittersweet for some. The new game is inspired by Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, a popular mobile game that recently ended service in Japan after a decade.

A new preview from IGN has revealed that this isn’t simply a remake or a re-release of the original game. Instead, it’s a completely new version built using ideas and elements from the first one.

This game is a complete, traditional console experience – not a free-to-play title with ongoing purchases. It was built specifically for the PlayStation 5 from the start, utilizing the studio’s unique HD-2D visual style.

You can find details about the story in the preview, but I wanted to briefly mention the battle system. It lets you summon iconic characters from the Final Fantasy series as special allies called Visions.

These additions don’t change what moves your characters normally have, but they do make battles more interesting, especially when considering elemental strengths and weaknesses. For instance, Cloud from Final Fantasy 7 can use both physical and thunder attacks to stun enemies. If you manage to weaken an enemy, you’ll get another turn in battle.

IGN notes that this Final Fantasy game feels lighter and more colorful than recent installments, reminding them of the Dragon Quest series. However, they expect the story might become more serious as the game progresses.

I’m really looking forward to this, but I’m a little worried about the release date. October 22nd is a crowded time with lots of other games coming out, especially towards the end of the year.

I’ll definitely give it a try when I have some free time. Honestly, it’s awesome to see Final Fantasy going with the HD-2D look – it’s something fans like me have wanted for ages!
