7 Deeply Problematic Marvel Heroes and How to Fix Them

Marvel Comics created heroes in a way that set them apart from DC Comics. This difference was especially noticeable in the early days of comics, known as the Silver Age, as Marvel’s characters felt more relatable to readers. Over time, this approach became the industry standard, with most publishers now creating characters with similar depth. However, this complexity has sometimes led these heroes down difficult paths, and over the years, it’s created significant issues for some of Marvel’s most iconic characters. In some cases, these heroes have become known more for their problems than for their heroic qualities, which isn’t ideal.

Many Marvel fans agree that some heroes are currently falling short. But it’s not too late to improve things – these characters aren’t beyond saving! Here are seven Marvel heroes with issues that could be addressed and fixed.

7) Reed Richards

Okay, let’s talk about Reed Richards, aka Mr. Fantastic. He’s undeniably brilliant – a scientific genius and a long-standing hero. But honestly, the character has been… inconsistent lately. For years, we’ve seen him swing between the classic, selfless hero and someone willing to make seriously questionable choices, prioritizing the greater good (or what he thinks is the greater good) over everything, even his family. It’s become genuinely confusing trying to figure out what motivates him. And you know what? I think there’s a really simple explanation that’s been floating around online for a while that actually makes a lot of sense: Reed Richards could be portrayed as autistic. It would instantly reconcile all those conflicting aspects of his personality and, if handled with sensitivity, could provide some genuinely positive representation of neurodiversity. Though, we also have to acknowledge that Stan Lee’s original writing wasn’t always the most progressive, particularly when it came to his portrayal of women.

6) Professor X

Kitty Pryde famously called Professor X a jerk, and recent writers seem to have embraced that darker side of his character. While Xavier is dedicated to protecting mutants and achieving his dream, he’s far from perfect. He’s shown a willingness to do awful things – like manipulating those close to him – to ensure mutant survival. Now, the character feels broken, and there seem to be only two ways to repair the damage: either fully embrace him as a villain, or have him sincerely apologize for his actions and return to the compassionate Charles Xavier fans remember from years past. He’s become difficult to root for, and a change is needed.

5) Beast

The character Beast is currently split into two distinct versions: a clone carrying memories from his time with the Avengers, and a new, villainous version of Hank McCoy. While some might think having both a ‘good’ and ‘evil’ Beast is ideal, many fans dislike this storyline. A simple solution could be to reveal that the current, evil Beast is actually possessed by Sublime – a powerful being. This makes sense because the current Beast already has the white fur associated with the Sublime-possessed Beast from an older New X-Men story arc. Revealing possession would explain his recent negative actions and allow fans to reconnect with the original Hank McCoy they appreciate.

4) Hank Pym

Hank Pym was a prominent early hero in Marvel’s Silver Age, but he’s now mostly remembered for creating Ultron and, unfortunately, for a problematic relationship with the Wasp. Despite attempts to rehabilitate his image, readers haven’t changed their perception of him. The only way to truly fix Hank Pym is for Marvel to take a risk: make him a central hero in a major storyline and give him a chance to be the one who saves the day. Giving him significant, positive moments that a wide audience can see would help establish him as the great hero he has the potential to be and give fans a new perspective on his character.

3) Cyclops

Look, Cyclops always gets a bad rap for being a bit of a stiff, but there’s this weird part of his history – abandoning his wife and son to start X-Factor – that’s always felt…off. Marvel recently released a ‘What If…?’ comic where he doesn’t do that, and it ends with him basically destroying the planet to save it. The implication? That him being a terrible husband was actually a good thing. Honestly, it’s a huge misstep. What they should have done is just let him be a flawed character and own his mistakes! It’s a pattern with Scott Summers – he consistently makes awful choices, but never faces the consequences. It’s time Marvel embraced that darkness. It would make him a far more compelling and interesting character, believe me.

2) Spider-Man

Spider-Man’s fanbase is known for being particularly unhappy, especially online – the subreddit can be a difficult place to visit. This negativity stems largely from a controversial storyline called “One More Day” which happened nearly two decades ago. Simply reversing that story and restoring Peter Parker’s marriage to Mary Jane isn’t enough anymore. To truly improve Spider-Man, Marvel’s editors need to allow the character to evolve and develop instead of trying to keep him in a constant state of struggle. The ironic thing is, many believe fans want to see a happier Spider-Man, as versions where he was happily married were actually very popular. Ultimately, fans want growth and change for the character, and Marvel needs to give creators the freedom to deliver that.

1) Starfox

It’s deeply troubling that Starfox has a long history of sexual assault within Marvel comics, and for years, Marvel hasn’t addressed it. The closest they came was a storyline where She-Hulk questioned whether she consented to intimacy with him, suggesting he might have used his powers to influence her. Starfox is a seriously problematic character, and the only way forward is for Marvel to acknowledge and address his harmful actions towards women in their universe. It’s shocking that Marvel Studios considered including him in the MCU without fully investigating his backstory – it could have been a major crisis if anyone had looked into how casually Marvel has treated these issues.
