Season 2 of X-Men ’97 is coming this summer, following the success of its first season on Disney+ in 2024. The new trailers show that the X-Men will be split into separate teams and sent to different time periods – some will travel to the distant past, while others will find themselves in a devastating future.
We’re getting hints that Season 2 of X-Men ’97 will include at least six different X-Men characters. However, it seems one popular character won’t be appearing. This isn’t a new problem – it’s something fans have noticed ever since the original X-Men: The Animated Series aired in the 1990s.
X-Men ’97: Lot of Hype, But No Magik?

Magik (Illyana Rasputin) hasn’t had much focus in the X-Men animated series. She appeared briefly in just one episode of X-Men: The Animated Series, titled “Red Dawn.” That episode primarily centered on her brother, Colossus, battling Soviet forces threatening his hometown, and Illyana was a young child who simply helped the X-Men during their mission.
Illyana, also known as Magik, hasn’t appeared in any of the X-Men animated shows, including the recent X-Men ’97. The third episode of X-Men ’97 introduced the story of Jean Grey’s clone, Madelyne Pryor, and her becoming the Goblin Queen, leading many fans to anticipate a future storyline involving the demonic dimension of Limbo and Magik, the mutant who escaped its influence.
But the new trailer for X-Men ’97 is making fans worry, because one quick scene strongly suggests a tragic outcome for the character Illyana Rasputin.
It appears that X-Men ’97 Season 2 may be heading in a direction that disappoints many fans. Unless this is a different timeline, the show seems to be confirming that Illyana Rasputin, who first appeared as a character in X-Men: The Animated Series, will eventually become Magik, only to be killed during the attack on Genosha by the Wild Sentinels. If this happens in the main storyline, fans of Marvel animation could lose a beloved, recently developed X-Men character.
Why Is Marvel’s Magik So Popular?

As a huge X-Men fan, I’ve been really fascinated by Illyana Rasputin’s journey lately. She’s really come into her own as ‘Magik’! The backstory is wild – she was taken to this demonic realm called Limbo by this villain, Belasco, and basically raised in a seriously messed-up culture. Luckily, she was rescued by some good magic before Belasco could fully twist her. She then used her teleportation abilities, plus everything she learned in Limbo, to defeat Belasco and become the ruler of Limbo herself – that’s when she took on the name ‘Magik.’ But here’s the crazy part: when she finally returned to Earth, it turned out only a short time had passed here! Colossus and the rest of the X-Men were completely shocked to see her – she’d aged a decade and become incredibly powerful, but to them, it felt like she’d only been gone a little while.
Magik started with the X-Men’s younger team, The New Mutants, and later became a core member of the X-Men, currently fighting alongside Cyclops in the ongoing comic series. She’s become incredibly popular in comics and has also appeared in other media, including the New Mutants movie (played by Anya Taylor-Joy) and the popular game Marvel Rivals, where she’s a fan-favorite character.
We don’t know if or when Magik will appear in a live-action Marvel movie, but Marvel’s animated shows shouldn’t miss the chance to introduce this awesome character in the meantime.
X-Men ’97 Season 2 will premiere on Disney+ on July 1st.
