It takes two to mark this special occasion! Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen will be celebrating their 40th birthdays on June 13th. While it feels like a long time since fans have heard much about the former child stars, now successful fashion designers, that’s by design – they intentionally live private lives.
As Mary-Kate explained to British Vogue in 2019, “We’ve been there and done that…But this is the path we chose: to step away from being constantly in the public eye and let our work speak for itself.”
That work is The Row, their high-end fashion brand which they started in 2005. It represented a shift for both of them, as they transitioned from acting careers into the world of design.
Looking back, Ashley admits they weren’t fully aware of their motivations at the time. In a 2021 interview with i-D, she explained that they had just moved to New York and were only 18 years old. They knew they wanted to step away from their previous lives and discover new passions, essentially figuring out who they wanted to become.
Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen became stars at a very young age, sharing the role of Michelle Tanner on the TV show Full House. By the time they were six years old, they had built a successful business called Dualstar, which included movies and merchandise. They went on to star in popular projects like The Adventures of Mary-Kate & Ashley, Passport to Paris, Holiday in the Sun, and So Little Time.

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s last movie together was New York Minute in 2004. Since then, they’ve become well-known figures in the fashion industry – they even won the American Accessory Designer of the Year award at the 2025 CFDA Fashion Awards. However, they dislike being constantly referred to as “The Olsen Twins” or “The Girls.”
In a 2023 interview with the Financial Times, Mary-Kate explained, “We have had very interesting lives. We work together, we’re business partners, we’re sisters.” She pointed out that it’s unusual for designers to be known simply as “the girls,” and that’s the source of their frustration.
They emphasize that they are adults, despite still being called “The Girls.” Mary-Kate added, “Age doesn’t really matter, but we’re still ‘The Girls.’”

Oh my gosh, can you believe that Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen basically stumbled into show business? It’s so crazy! Their dad, Dave Olsen, actually didn’t want them to be involved at all. He was a golfer then got into real estate, and he told The Washington Post back in ’91 that their mom, Jarnette – who used to be a ballerina, by the way – sent a photo of the twins to an agency on a whim! Dave basically just said, ‘Okay, if you really want to do this…’ And then, boom! They landed the role of Michelle Tanner on Full House when they were only nine months old. It’s amazing how it all happened.
The best part is, Mary-Kate and Ashley have always said their parents weren’t pushy at all. Ashley even told David Letterman that they felt so lucky to have parents who didn’t force them into anything. Dave and Jarnette did help manage everything – can you imagine the paperwork with Dualstar and all their stuff?! He mentioned mountains of memos to the L.A. Times! But Elizabeth Olsen actually revealed in The Guardian that after getting them that first gig, her parents mostly focused on connecting Mary-Kate and Ashley with people who could handle being child stars and managing everything else. They knew their limits!
It’s a little sad that Dave and Jarnette eventually divorced in the mid-90s, but he did find happiness again with McKenzie Olsen. But seriously, what a story! From reluctant parents to a total media empire – it’s just… iconic!

Trent Olsen, the oldest child of Dave and Jarnette, was born in 1984. His sister, Elizabeth, told Interview magazine in 2012 that he’s actually the most talented member of the family. Though he appeared in some of Mary-Kate and Ashley’s videos as a child, like You’re Invited to Mary Kate & Ashley’s Sleepover Party, Trent now prefers to stay out of the spotlight. He’s worked as a screenwriter, a comic book writer for Storm King Productions, and as editor-in-chief of the digital content platform Rogue Matter. He married Alexis in May 2026.

Born just two minutes before her twin sister in 1986, Ashley Olsen began her career as a child actor. She starred alongside Mary-Kate in popular shows like Full House and several movies, including the Adventures of Mary-Kate & Ashley series, It Takes Two, Passport to Paris, and So Little Time. Their final film together was 2004’s New York Minute. Soon after, both sisters moved to New York City to attend NYU but quickly shifted their focus to building a fashion brand, The Row, in 2005.
Ashley has shown no signs of wanting to return to acting. In a 2013 interview with Allure, she explained that she wanted to dedicate herself fully to any future endeavors, stating, “I need to do things 100 percent. I don’t feel like I can give you 100 percent of my time.”
Ashley married Louis Eisner in 2022 and reportedly welcomed their son, Otto, in 2023.

After Ashley left acting, Mary-Kate continued with it for a little longer—appearing in the 2007 show Weeds, 2008 movie The Wackness and finally 2011’s Beastly.
And while Mary-Kate’s personal life occasionally made headlines—including her 2020 split from then-husband Olivier Sarkozy—she prefers to be more private (neither she nor Ashley are even on social media).
“Everyone’s looking for a good story,” she told TopMob in 2004, “we don’t read the good, we don’t read the bad. We just can’t let things like that affect us.”
When Mary-Kate isn’t busy co-running The Row, she enjoys riding horses. As the equestrian once told horse show HITS, “It allows me to exist in another world.”

Born in 1989, Elizabeth Olsen began acting as a child, playfully appearing in home movies made by her sisters—including one called How the West Was Fun! from 1994. She didn’t start acting professionally until she was older, with roles in films like Silent House and Martha Marcy May Marlene in 2011.
Since then, Olsen has become known for her work in a variety of projects, including the movies Godzilla and Wind River, as well as the TV series Love & Death. She also joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) playing the character Wanda Maximoff, appearing in several Avengers films and the acclaimed series WandaVision.
In a 2012 interview with The Guardian, Olsen stated she never relied on her sisters to get acting jobs. “I could have pulled a few strings through them, but I never needed to,” she explained.
Elizabeth married Robbie Arnett in 2019, and People magazine reported in June 2026 that they are expecting their first child.

Courtney, born in 1997, is the half-sister of Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen through their father Dave’s marriage to McKenzie. Though she prefers a more private life, Courtney has publicly supported her siblings – for example, she shared a photo from when she saw Elizabeth Olsen’s movie Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness with Trent and their brother Jake Olsen in 2022, joking about being big fans. Like her sisters, Courtney is also an actress, having appeared in the 2024 short film Cheers. She recently announced her engagement on Instagram in May 2025, playfully downplaying it as “no biggie.”

Born in 1998, Jake is the youngest of the Olsen siblings, joining older brother Dave and sister McKenzie. He shared with Runway magazine in 2016 (as reported by People) that he cherishes family time despite the chaos, saying it’s surprisingly normal and that they all encourage each other’s goals.
Fans saw a glimpse of this close bond when Jake posted a picture with his sister Elizabeth, writing, “I love family time with my sister.”
Professionally, Jake works behind the scenes in film and video. For example, he was an assistant director on Lil Rot’s 2022 music video for the song “Make Up My Mind.”
