PlayStation recently gave away a highly anticipated 2026 game for free due to a mistake on the PlayStation Network. While free games sometimes become available because of PSN errors, it doesn’t happen often – usually only once or twice a year. This latest error is particularly significant, as it involved a major, first-party game from PlayStation itself.
Okay, so this is pretty cool! Apparently, there was a glitch on the PlayStation Network, and a bunch of PS5 and PS5 Pro owners – including me, thankfully! – accidentally got a free copy of Marathon, Bungie’s new shooter. Bungie, as you probably know, made the original Halo games and Destiny, so it’s a big deal! It normally costs $40, and it’s not even a freebie with PS Plus yet, so getting it for free was a sweet surprise. The glitch is fixed now, so you can’t get it that way anymore. Usually when stuff like this happens, PlayStation takes those free downloads away, but this time they’re letting us keep them! It’s awesome to see they’re letting players enjoy the game.
Free 2026 PS5 Game
Okay, so there was this crazy thing that happened with the PlayStation Store and our free weekend for the game. Basically, we let people play for free for a bit, and at the same time, the Deluxe Edition was on sale – like, a really good sale. Now, normally you can only upgrade to the Deluxe Edition if you already own the base game. But because of the free weekend, some PS5 players were able to snag the Deluxe Edition thinking it included the full game (which it usually does), but without actually owning the base game first! Bungie and PlayStation ended up having to give those people a free copy of the game when the trial ended. They’ve since updated how the Deluxe Edition is described on the store so it’s clear what you get, and doesn’t say it includes a full copy if you don’t have one already.
Some PlayStation 5 owners recently received a shooting game that’s struggling to find a large audience. While the game scored well with critics (82 on Metacritic) and has positive player feedback, plus it’s available on multiple platforms, its player base isn’t large enough for Bungie to thrive – not compared to the success of Destiny and its sequel. So far, the game hasn’t been a commercial hit, which might make Sony more willing to offer it as a free promotion.
