Marvel was brilliant at recovering from any missteps, and that’s what kept us all hooked for over a decade. Everyone’s been trying to figure out how they did it, attempting to copy their formula, but nothing else has come close to capturing that same magic.
Many things helped make the Marvel Cinematic Universe so successful, but Kevin Feige’s leadership is often considered the most important reason. He became such a key part of the MCU that when Warner Bros. was starting its DC films, they even tried to hire him away from Disney.
That plan didn’t work out as hoped. Kevin Feige initially wanted to create a connected Marvel movie universe, mirroring the way Stan Lee and Jack Kirby built their world in comic books. The 2012 film The Avengers was the first major success of this approach, but it also launched a larger storyline that culminated with the 2019 film Avengers: Endgame.
The MCU Failed To Establish A Cohesive Overarching Narrative In The Multiverse Saga
By 2026, seven years after the conclusion of the Infinity Saga, it’s clear that Marvel Studios has shifted its strategy, though not by design. While initially planned to follow the same format as before, the Multiverse Saga has faced several challenges and needed adjustments, making this era feel less unified. The fact that Avengers: Doomsday doesn’t build on previous storylines reinforces this idea. Directors Joe and Anthony Russo have even called this period ‘Phase Zero’ for the MCU, implying a fresh start.
This aligns with earlier hints that the upcoming Avengers films will essentially restart the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With Earth’s heroes, the Fantastic Four, and the X-Men (now part of the MCU) uniting against Doctor Doom – played by Robert Downey Jr. – these movies, particularly Avengers: Secret Wars, are expected to create a fresh starting point for the entire universe. This is unlike Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, which concluded the long-running ‘Infinity Saga,’ bringing together storylines that had been built up over many years for both individual characters and the overall narrative.
The upcoming Avengers movies are currently planned a certain way largely because the Multiverse Saga didn’t go as smoothly as hoped. Marvel Studios, led by Kevin Feige, typically plans out several years in advance – they had ideas for what came after Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home even before those films were released. However, various challenges caused them to change course and drop some projects. While the idea of alternate universes is still important to their stories, it hasn’t become a strong enough theme to build the next two major team-up movies around.
The MCU Needs Better Connectivity After Avengers: Secret Wars
It’s no exaggeration to say the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe depends heavily on the success of Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. Marvel Studios is going all-out for these films, even bringing back Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr. in significant roles. If they can recapture audience excitement, it’s crucial that they return to Kevin Feige’s original plan – a universe where the stories are closely connected.
One of the biggest strengths of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has always been its engaging stories. Fans loved digging for hidden details and analyzing scenes, trying to predict what would happen next or connect it to earlier movies. This kept people interested and helped the MCU attract a wider audience beyond just comic book fans. Now, as Marvel Studios tries to regain momentum after the complicated Multiverse Saga, focusing on simpler, more straightforward storytelling is likely the most effective way to win back viewers.
