The STALKER series from GSC Game World is well-known and loved by gamers. It’s famous for creating a truly immersive and tense experience by combining elements of survival horror, first-person shooting, and open-world exploration. Players can easily lose over 100 hours exploring its unique game world, known as the Zone.
The STALKER games take place in the eerie and dangerous Chornobyl Exclusion Zone, where players must fight for survival against deadly threats like strange anomalies, mutated creatures, radiation, and other scavengers, all while piecing together the zone’s hidden truths. This list details every game in the series, presented in both chronological and release order, for both new and returning players.
How to Play STALKER Games in Chronological Order?

Even though the first three games came out close together, their stories don’t happen in that order within the game’s world. One game tells what happened before the others, and the rest pick up the story, continuing to explore the Zone and its secrets.
Playing the games in order helps you better understand what happened before the first game and how the world changes throughout the series.
| Game Name | Release Year | Platforms |
|---|---|---|
| S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky | 2008 | PC, Xbox, PlayStation, Switch |
| S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl | 2007 | PC, Xbox, PlayStation, Switch |
| S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat | 2010 | PC, Xbox, PlayStation, Switch |
| S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl | 2024 | PC, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5 |
The Enhanced Editions, released in 2024-2025, offer improved graphics and technology, but the core story remains the same. Because of this, they aren’t listed as separate items in the timeline.
How to Play STALKER Games in Release Order?
Playing the games in the order they were released is still the best way to enjoy the series. It keeps the secrets of the Zone intact, lets the big story twists happen as they should, and shows you how the gameplay improved over the three games, preparing you for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2.
1. S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl
| Developer | GSC Game World |
| Metacritic Score (As of June 14, 2026) | ~82 |
Shadow of Chernobyl, the first game in the series, throws you into a strange situation as ‘the Marked One’ – a stalker who lost their memory in a truck accident within the dangerous Zone. All you have is a PDA telling you to eliminate someone named Strelok, and that simple goal kicks off an adventure filled with one of gaming’s most captivating stories.
Shadow of Chernobyl was truly special because of its incredibly immersive atmosphere. The game’s Zone felt dynamic and dangerous, forcing players to be strategic with their supplies, carefully consider who to ally with, and fight for survival in intense battles where every shot counted. Even though it had some technical problems when it first came out, the game’s detailed world and unpredictable gameplay quickly gained it a devoted following.
2. S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky
| Developer | GSC Game World |
| Metacritic Score (As of June 14, 2026) | ~75 |
Released a year after the original, Clear Sky tells the story of what happened before Shadow of Chernobyl. You play as Scar, a hired gun with a unique skill: he can withstand the Zone’s dangerous radiation surges.
Clear Sky was well-received for expanding the game’s story and adding new features, but it unfortunately had a lot of technical problems at launch. Despite these issues, it’s still a key part of the series, offering important background information about Strelok and the evolving world of the Zone.
3. S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat
| Developer | GSC Game World |
| Metacritic Score (As of June 14, 2026) | ~80 |
Call of Pripyat begins right after the events of Shadow of Chernobyl. The Ukrainian government sends a team into the Zone to investigate what was discovered in the previous game, but the operation quickly fails when military helicopters crash for unknown reasons.
Call of Pripyat is often considered the best game in the original S.T.A.L.K.E.R. trilogy. It improved upon its predecessors with a bigger world to explore, more engaging quests, fewer technical issues, and greater freedom for players. The game also did a great job of wrapping up storylines while offering some of the most enjoyable gameplay in the series.
4. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl
| Developer | GSC Game World |
| Metacritic Score (As of June 14, 2026) | ~73 |
The popular S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series is back after over ten years with S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl. The game features a new main character, Skif, and uses the latest technology, but it still continues the story set in the mysterious Zone.
The new game features a much larger world to explore, filled with ever-changing events, dangerous creatures and locations, and conflicts between different groups. Your decisions will heavily impact the story and lead to various endings. While keeping the challenging survival gameplay of the previous games, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 updates and improves almost everything about the experience.
New to the STALKER Series? Where to Start
If you’re just getting into the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series, we recommend starting with S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl. While Clear Sky takes place earlier in the story, it expects you to already know a bit about the world and reveals plot details that were meant to be discovered later on.
Okay, so I totally loved Shadow of Chernobyl, and if you’re like me and want to dive deeper into the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. world, I’d recommend playing Clear Sky next, then Call of Pripyat. Trust me, it keeps the biggest surprises intact, and you get to see how the game mechanics have improved over time. Then, when S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl finally comes out, you’ll be totally prepared!
If you’re playing the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games for the story, it’s best to play them in this order: start with Clear Sky. For the best experience, we recommend playing the Enhanced Editions of the original three games. They have updated graphics while still keeping the feel of the classics.
To truly enjoy the STALKER games, patience is crucial. The most memorable experiences often happen when you slow down and explore the world, search for useful items, and discover the dangers of the Zone. Taking your time like this can be much more satisfying than just focusing on completing the main story.
