In contrast to July’s crowded lineup of major releases, August is less busy and primarily offers ports, remakes, and remastered versions of games. However, these re-releases share space with several notable games that cater to a variety of genres. Here are the top 10 games set for release in August 2025.
1) The Rogue Prince of Persia
The original Prince of Persia experienced a significant turn with “The Lost Crown,” and the upcoming spin-off, “The Rogue of Prince of Persia,” is poised to build on that success (even though the team behind “The Lost Crown” has been integrated into other Ubisoft studios). This roguelike adaptation offers a level of replayability that its platformer forerunners lack, and it boasts a visually striking art style and a unique Persian EDM fusion soundtrack.
This game hails from Evil Empire, known for their work on the popular roguelike title Dead Cells. Although they’ve hinted at a potential release in August following its early access period, it might still be delayed. As of now, it’s uncertain if it will also debut on platforms other than PC, but given its potential, it’s definitely worth keeping an eye on.
Release Date: No solid release date yet, but it’s slated for PC.
2) Mafia: The Old Country
In a departure from the traditional Mafia series that often showcases Italians committing crimes in America, the latest installment, “Mafia: The Old Country,” ventures back to Italy and delves into the origins of organized crime. Not only is it a prequel, but it also harks back to older-style shooter games, offering a more streamlined and linear gameplay experience that can be completed in a reasonable time frame. This move to recreate an earlier era in gaming is daring, considering the current trend of publishers favoring large-scale projects. “Mafia: The Old Country” asserts that focusing on quality rather than quantity is a wise decision, and it’s up to Hangar 13 to demonstrate this.
Release Date: August 8th via PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC
3) Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2
As an eager admirer, I’m thrilled to share that “Hellblade 2” – a game initially exclusive to Xbox consoles – is now making its way to PlayStation 5 (PS5). The publisher has enjoyed significant success with cross-platform launches like this, but whether Senua’s next adventure will reach those heights remains to be seen. However, the PS5 version promises additional features, such as four hours of developer commentary, an advanced photo mode, a performance mode, and a new difficulty level that resembles permadeath.
Initially, “Hellblade 2” received mixed reactions upon release, but it’s possible that its journey on PS5 will win over more fans. On the same day, an upgraded version of the original “Hellblade” will be released for PS5, and it will be free for those who already own the PS4 version.
Release Date: August 12th via PS5 (already on Xbox Series X|S and PC)
4) Madden NFL 26
Madden NFL 26, similar to previous Madden games, is expected to be a familiar choice for players, depending on their preference. This year’s version introduces new coach behaviors, unique quarterback characteristics, and enhanced player attributes, which are the outcomes of an AI system that has been fed football footage from over a decade of NFL games. This added realism in player-specific actions aims to deepen the experience of simulating play as these renowned athletes. Additionally, it includes dynamic substitutions, expanded playbooks, updated physics, player fatigue, custom defensive zones, improved player movements, position updates, a wider variety of weather conditions, and additional features.
Release Date: August 14th via PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC
5) Sword of the Sea
Sword of the Sea can be likened to a fusion of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater and Journey, with the addition of a sword, which is already intriguing. This game, boasting both elegance and casualness, invites players to surf on a vast blade, perform tricks, and rebuild the world, all while being developed by Giant Squid, the creators of Abzu and The Pathless. The studio’s track record of combining captivating visual aesthetics, a relaxing atmosphere, and robust gameplay mechanics is commendable and promises great things for this upcoming release.
Release Date: August 19th via PS5 and PC (will launch on PlayStation Plus Extra)
6) Gears of War: Reloaded
August is brimming with ports, remasters, and remakes, and Gears of War: Reloaded is a blend of these two types. It’s essentially an update to the 2015 Ultimate Edition, enhancing the visuals of the original 2006 game and integrating its downloadable content (DLC). Although quite common, this also signifies the series’ introduction on PlayStation platforms for the first time.
This new release boasts full compatibility across platforms and saves for both its single-player campaign and multiplayer mode, along with VRR and HDR support. It’ll also include all DLC from the Windows version and the Ultimate Edition. It’s somewhat peculiar to reissue just the first game without any updates for its sequels, but given its significance, Gears of War deserves a fresh introduction to new players. If you already own the digital Ultimate Edition on Xbox, you’ll get this upgrade for free too.
Release Date: August 26th via PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (will launch on Game Pass)
7) Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater
The highly anticipated title, Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, is bound to create quite a buzz. This is the first Metal Gear Solid game not overseen by renowned director Hideo Kojima since the less-than-favorable Metal Gear Solid: Survive. Being a remake of the 2005 original, it retains the same performances but incorporates modern elements such as crouch walking and updated graphics that may be adored or criticized. Despite some uncertainty about its reception, the core gameplay has aged well, suggesting that the overall quality might still shine through.
Release Date: August 28th via PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC
8) Kirby and the Forgotten Land Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Star Crossed World
In simpler terms, “Kirby and the Forgotten Land”, one of the top games for Nintendo Switch, is getting an updated version for the rumored Switch 2. Unlike other upgraded games with debatable new additions like the ports of “Breath of the Wild” and “Tears of the Kingdom”, this new version of The Forgotten Land comes with a genuine expansion called “Star-Crossed World”. Details about this DLC are scarce, but it will include new Mouthful Modes, stages, and powers. Despite the mystery surrounding it, the high quality of “Forgotten Land” provides a strong base for this expansion to build upon.
Release Date: August 28th via Nintendo Switch 2
9) Lost Soul Aside
Another action RPG titled “Lost Soul Aside” is being developed by a Chinese studio, and it’s generating quite a buzz. Unlike many other titles that mimic FromSoftware’s style, this game combines the fast-paced, juggle-focused combat of Devil May Cry with a touch of the emotional depth found in Final Fantasy 16. Having been in development for over a decade, it comes from an unproven studio, but its previews suggest a promising new addition to a genre that is often overlooked.
Release Date: August 29th via PS5 and PC
10) Shinobi: Art of Vengeance
Shinobi, a franchise that appeared to be lying low, has been biding its time in the shadows, preparing for a spectacular comeback with the game Shinboi: Art of Vengeance.
Release Date: August 29th via PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC
