The MCU Just Introduced Villains Powerful Enough To Take Down Celestials

Marvel Studios’ animated projects sometimes don’t get the same recognition as their live-action counterparts, and it’s easy to overlook shows like “I Am Groot” on Disney+ due to the abundance of animated content featuring Marvel characters with no connection to the big-screen Avengers. However, Kevin Feige and his team are not messing around, so it’s high time we start taking animation more seriously. After all, “What If…?” introduced Captain Carter, who will play a significant role in “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” as part of the Illuminati.

Captain Carter is relatively insignificant in comparison to the impressive reveal in the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe project, “Eyes of Wakanda.” This animated anthology series boasts significant links to characters from “Black Panther,” such as King T’Challa. The most significant Easter egg takes us well beyond the lands of Wakanda, introducing a formidable gang of villains that could potentially erase all traces of the Celestials.

The Horde Makes Its MCU Debut in Eyes of Wakanda

In “Eyes of Wakanda,” various members of the War Dogs, spanning different eras, share a common objective: recovering vibranium artifacts before they’re misused. Episode 4, titled “The Last Panther,” opens in Ethiopia during the late 1800s, amidst the First Italo-Ethiopian War. Kuda and Prince Tafari are tasked with retrieving a vibranium axe that resembles the one taken by Killmonger at the start of “Black Panther.” They must disregard the ongoing conflict to complete their mission. After narrowly escaping, they set off for home, but encounter an alien creature with camouflage abilities who isn’t interested in making allies.

Following a swift conflict, the enigmatic entity unveils itself as a Black Panther hailing from five centuries ahead. This time-traveling feline needs to bring back an axe to its original location in order to prevent the nation’s destruction. Although Kuda and Tafari are skeptical of her tale, she demonstrates images of her present using technology, revealing a race of aliens called the Horde invading Wakanda and slaughtering everyone they encounter. The only way to rectify this situation is by ensuring that the axe ends up with Killmonger, but that won’t happen if it returns to its origin.

In the midst of her assignment, Black Panther gets abruptly transported to a future timeframe. The Horde tracks her down, along with her associates, forcing them into a desperate standoff to prevent the Horde from accessing the time portal. Miraculously, their valiant efforts pay off as Tafari retrieves the axe and safeguards Wakanda. Unfortunately, it seems that the rest of the galaxy might face trouble since the Horde is nothing to underestimate.

The MCU’s Celestials Need to Have Their Heads on a Swivel Moving Forward

In Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) productions, the Celestials are often depicted as mighty entities who orchestrate the formation of the multiverse. One of these powerful beings, named Ego, embarks on a long-term scheme to conquer galaxies by sowing seeds that eventually grant him dominion over planets. The Guardians of the Galaxy thwart his plans, but Ego is not the only Celestial with such ambitions. In the movie “Eternals,” the Celestials dispatch the Eternals to Earth to ready it for the emergence of Tiamut, a destructive force that will wipe out all life. Sersi and her comrades prevent Tiamut’s arrival, which earns them Arishem’s wrath. However, if the Horde interferes, they might have a chance to escape from Arishem’s clutches.

In the storyline of “Eyes of Wakanda”, the origins of the Horde aren’t extensively explored, yet Marvel Comics provide us with insights. The Horde is known to serve Fulcrum, a being whose objective is annihilation. This destructive force has the power to contaminate Celestials, transforming them into Dark Celestials – significantly more malevolent than their benign counterparts. As for future appearances of the Horde in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), it’s uncertain at this point. However, if it does make a comeback, few characters seem capable of preventing the Horde from causing catastrophic damage across the galaxy.
