2021 has given many Sims enthusiasts an opportunity to reminisce about the series’ history, as the original game that sparked the franchise turned 25 this year. However, it might surprise you to know that The Sims 4 was launched more than a decade ago. Electronic Arts (EA) continues to regularly release expansion packs and fresh content for the game, but some fans have begun to notice signs of wear and tear. In the past, EA has hinted at the possibility of a The Sims 5, but unfortunately, the developer has recently shared disappointing news for those eagerly awaiting a new installation.
Fans of The Sims series have been eagerly awaiting news about a potential new installment, which was once speculated to be Project Rene. However, it has now been clarified by EA that Project Rene is not The Sims 5, but rather a separate project that will coexist with The Sims 4 for the time being. Despite this, enthusiasts of The Sims continue to hope that one day EA will recognize the need for an upgrade and bring us The Sims 5. Unfortunately, as of now, it seems that this dream remains exclusively among the fans.
In an interview with Variety, EA Entertainment’s president discussed future plans for their major franchises, including The Sims. Although the focus wasn’t solely on The Sims, given its significance within EA, it was a natural topic of discussion. Miele’s statements suggest that they will continue to develop and support The Sims 4 instead of immediately releasing a new version, such as The Sims 5.
EA Confirms The Sims 5 Is Still Definitely Not Happening
Miele’s statements indicate that Electronic Arts (EA) has no immediate intention of replacing the current Sims 4 universe with a new sequel. According to Miele, speaking to Variety, “We’ve released over 85 expansion packs for The Sims 4 over the past decade, and it’s not beneficial for players to start over.
Indeed, Miele raises a valid argument. Previous versions such as The Sims 2 and The Sims 3 had shorter lifespans, resulting in fewer content packs. Instead of releasing new content all at once, they would gradually update similar content over time. This approach meant we had to wait for The Sims 4 to offer features like Pets or the latest addition, Fairies. Considering this gradual release model, it’s understandable why they would choose to continue supporting the current game.
As a devoted fan, it’s clear that the persistent issues and bugs in The Sims 4 have left many of us yearning for a complete overhaul. The dream of a fresh start in The Sims 5 primarily stems from this desire. However, it’s important to note that Electronic Arts (EA) might not opt for a ground-up rebuild. Instead, we can anticipate exciting new projects and innovative experiments with The Sims 4.
Recent evidence of this includes the enchanting Enchanted By Nature pack. Moreover, EA is planning to introduce a multiplayer aspect to The Sims, which could very well be part of the long-awaited Project Rene. So, while we may not get an entirely new game, there’s certainly plenty to look forward to in the world of The Sims 4!
During an interview with Variety, Miele discussed the multiplayer aspect for The Sims, stating it’s a significant growth area for Electronic Arts currently. It appears that the team responsible for The Sims is intensely developing its multiplayer feature. Based on Miele’s comments and previous information about Project Rene, it seems likely this multiplayer platform will run alongside The Sims 4, but it won’t be a true sequel or replacement for The Sims 5. Instead, it should be viewed as an additional feature rather than the next major installment in the series.
At present, future enhancements for The Sims 4 and potential multiplayer elements within The Sims series are what’s on the horizon. Notably, Electronic Arts has also unveiled a fresh tabletop version of the game called The Sims Board Game. Although the franchise continues to thrive, it appears that Electronic Arts is not actively planning for a traditional sequel as we have seen in the past.
