It’s the hap-hap-happiest news for The Holiday fans.
Around twenty years since Kate Winslet, Cameron Diaz, Jack Black, and Jude Law discovered affection in the cherished Nancy Meyers movie, plans are underway for a television series remake, according to various reports as of August 1st.
In the Apple TV+ series, we’ll encounter fresh characters, similar to the movie version, as a solitary American woman and a solitary British woman decide to exchange their houses during the holiday season.
Contrary to the film, Meyers won’t be involved in the project. Instead, Rob Delaney is set to contribute as a writer. Additionally, Krissie Ducker, known for her work on “Sweetpea” and “The Assassin”, has also been assigned as executive producer.
TopMob News has reached out to Apple TV+ for comment and has not yet heard back.
Despite the fact that the series features a fresh cast, the original movie stars are still hopeful about finding more opportunities for a humorous comeback by potentially making a sequel to “The Holiday“.
Jude confirmed to TopMob News in December that he would indeed take part in the movie. He emphasized that only under Nancy Meyers’ leadership would he do so, as she stands out with her filmmaking style. She isn’t just a writer or director; she crafts an entire aesthetic and atmosphere, which is evident in her other films.
As for what Mr. Napkin Head would want to see?
The “Closer” actor expressed his curiosity, saying, “It makes me wonder, given that there were two exceptionally sweet pairs of people. I’d love to catch up with them again and find out what they’ve been up to.
To make it clear, it should definitely be during the most magical season of all. He stressed, “It is crucial that it is so. A holiday in the sun wouldn’t do justice to their setting.
It turns out that when it comes to heartwarming Christmas films, Nancy is unquestionably the go-to expert. In an interview with Vulture back in 2020, Cameron put it perfectly: “She has a unique ability to craft a genuinely immersive environment.
She described the set as having numerous textures and layers. Each character’s environment was distinctly defined, creating an immersive atmosphere. When walking onto the set, it often felt as though one was stepping into their world, rather than simply being on a filming location. In other words, the set felt like a tangible extension of the characters’ lives.
Speaking further, she noted that stepping onto the sets for the movie “The Holiday” felt like entering the homes of the characters themselves. The illusion was so strong that it was easy to forget you were on a soundstage with lights overhead and cameras nearby. Instead, you found yourself immersed in these well-crafted, reflective spaces where the characters reside.
As we await more details on the limited series, keep reading for festive facts about The Holiday.
1. In her own words, Nancy Meyers admitted that she had specific actresses in mind when penning the roles for Iris and Amanda: Kate Winslet and Cameron Diaz.
2. It’s only fair to acknowledge that casting Kate Winslet was almost a given. As Meyers put it, “When you’re writing a 30-year-old woman in England, Kate Winslet is the one who comes to mind. She’s simply one of the great actresses.”
3. Despite being the inspiration for the character Iris, Kate Winslet expressed her initial concerns about the project. “I had never done a romantic comedy before,” she shared with About.com in 2006. “I was excited to try something new but also nervous, wondering if I could be funny. Jude [Law] and I would talk a lot on the phone before we started filming, both of us worrying that we’d be fired or replaced because we might not make them laugh.”
4. In the role of the California-based movie trailer editor who never sheds tears, Diaz was an ideal pick for Meyers.
Cameron is incredibly funny, and I considered this decision carefully before casting her. Once she was on board, she continued to impress me in that regard. It’s quite challenging, I believe, to be both adorable and sexy, funny, and relatable to women. In my movies, I prefer working with actresses who are relatable to women because I don’t always understand the appeal of those actresses favored by men. Diaz is a true woman’s woman, and it’s evident that men find her attractive as well. She seemed perfectly suited for the role of a California girl.
5. Initially, Law wasn’t what Meyers had envisioned for the part of single dad Graham.
Jude Law’s character underwent more development during the writing process than the others. I gave him some unexpected twists and turns that you wouldn’t expect. After finishing the script, naturally, I thought of Jude Law. He is incredibly handsome and a fantastic actor, but I wasn’t initially confident he would fit the genre or handle this type of work. So, I met with him, we went over the script together, and he understood it perfectly. You know, he hadn’t had an opportunity to do something like this before.
Meyers decided to cast Jack Black for the role of Miles, Iris’ romantic interest, after being captivated by his performance in “School of Rock”. Speaking to ComingSoon.net, she expressed, “I found him irresistible on screen. He connected with the audience.”
She further stated, “As I envisioned this movie, I felt he was someone I wanted to write for, and although he’s not the traditional leading man, he’s charming and likable. It’s my way of saying that this is the kind of guy you’d want for a partner. He’s not tall, dark, and handsome, but he’s endearing, and why not? Everyone has a heart and deserves love.” She went on to pair him with Kate Winslet.
It was working alongside Winslet that eventually convinced Black to take the role, and Meyers even invited him for a dinner of pasta in an attempt to persuade him. In 2006, Black told Coming Soon, “Kate was as incredible as I had expected. She was one of the main reasons why I wanted to do the movie. I’m a big fan of hers and admire her acting skills.
8. The unscripted breast touch moment between Miles and Iris wasn’t originally planned, but was based on a genuine incident that happened between Black and Meyers.
9. In real life, Kate Winslet dated Rufus Sewell, who played Iris’s ex-boyfriend Jasper, in the early 1990s for a few months. However, there were no awkward moments on set. As Winslet told the Irish Examiner, “It was completely fine. I hadn’t seen him for a very long time, but we’d remained friends. It was really not a big deal. I was thrilled he got the part.
10. Amanda’s Los Angeles residence is stunning, but Iris’ quaint countryside abode captured everyone’s heart on the team. After an exhaustive search for a suitable home, the producers opted to construct one of their own, as they wanted proximity to London.
When referring to Meyers as “meticulous,” Law shared during a November 2024 interview on BBC Radio 2’s The Zoe Ball Breakfast Show, “She explored the entire region and didn’t quite find the idyllic cottage she desired. So she just rented a field and had someone design it.”
The production team completed Rosehill Cottage in mere two weeks, with Meyers saying in a DVD supplement, “We built that wall and planted those trees. It was truly a tourist attraction while it stood.”
Regrettably, the structure was demolished after filming, and all indoor scenes were filmed on a soundstage in Culver City, California. Thus, Meyers directed her cinematographer, Dean Cundey, to avoid wide shots within the cottage to maintain an intimate atmosphere.
11. One of the movie’s most memorable scenes is Law’s Mr. Napkinhead performance, with a significant portion of it being ad-libbed, as per Miffy Englefield, who edged out over 2,500 actresses to portray Graham’s daughter, Sophie. Englefield disclosed to Vulture that Law conceived the line about smoking being harmful, while Englefield sincerely told Diaz that the skit was “hilarious; you’ll tumble from your chair.
12. In an upcoming movie trailer that Amanda’s company is producing, it’s surprising to see Lindsay Lohan and James Franco in leading roles.
“I’ve known Lindsay since I directed ‘The Parent Trap,’ so I reminded her of that debt,” Meyers shared with ComingSoon.Net. “I basically convinced her to participate by saying, ‘You have to do this for me,’ and she was gracious about it.”
Regarding Franco, they had crossed paths at a few dinner parties thanks to mutual acquaintances. “So I already knew him a bit, and I asked if he would join in,” Meyers continued. “It turned out that Lindsay and James were friends, and the whole thing was quite enjoyable.”
13. During an appearance on ‘The Tonight Show With Jay Leno’ in 2006, Dustin Hoffman admitted his cameo in the Blockbuster scene was spontaneous. As he was passing by that store, he decided to stop and see what was going on. After chatting with Meyers for a while, she said, “Wait, I have an idea,” explained Hoffman. “So she put me in the movie, and being impulsive, I didn’t ask for any compensation.”
14. “Amanda’s quick sprint back to the cottage to rejoin Graham wasn’t part of the original plan.”
15. “Writing The Holiday, a classic in the romantic comedy genre, turned out to be ‘quite challenging’ for Meyers following 2003’s Something’s Gotta Give due to the complex storylines.”
“I aimed to paint a larger picture without tackling broader subjects by introducing multiple characters and stories,” Meyers shared. “It was actually enjoyable trying to intertwine them. The only deliberate decision I made was to avoid having each girl encounter just one person. So, on Kate’s side of the film, she develops a friendship with Eli and helps him, rather than instantly falling in love with someone. I felt it would be more engaging for the audience not to have two girls who immediately meet men and fall in love, creating a parallel scenario, but writing an ensemble movie was still quite enjoyable.
