One fascinating aspect of James Gunn’s DC Universe is its seamless integration of animated and live-action elements from the outset. For instance, Frank Grillo’s character Rick Flag Sr. was initially introduced in the animated series “Creature Commandos,” the first property within the DC Universe, before transitioning into a living character in Superman. Moreover, Gunn hinted that the upcoming 2028 film “Dynamic Duo” (centered around two distinct Robins) could possibly be set within the same continuity as the rest of the DC Universe.
As a passionate movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled about the prospect of the DC Universe branching out into animated films. This opens up a world of opportunities for vibrant and entertaining animations centered around iconic DC heroes. By drawing inspiration from the ingenious, stylish visuals of the beloved Spider-Verse series, we could craft unique visual styles that truly bring these comic book characters to life.
1) New Gods
Originally planned as a live-action DC Extended Universe film directed by Ava DuVernay, the creation of Jack Kirby’s “New Gods” is now slated for a TV show on DC Studios focusing on Mister Miracle. However, if DC Studios still desires to bring Mister Miracle, Big Barda, and other Apokolips heroes to the big screen, an animated film like the “Spider-Verse” would be a fitting choice. This format would perfectly render Kirby’s vibrant, fantastical sets and costumes on the big screen, allowing the New Gods to make a striking appearance without the need for realistic portrayal.
2) The Flash
It makes sense that the DC Universe is moving slowly when it comes to integrating Barry Allen/The Flash into its latest lineup of superheroes. People are still talking about 2023’s movie The Flash and the TV show starring Grant Gustin on the CW. To set a new big-screen Flash apart from these previous efforts, why not consider an animated film? This would create a clear distinction between this version of the character and those portrayed by Ezra Miller and Grant Gustin. Moreover, animation would allow for a more visually stunning depiction of The Flash’s speed powers.
3) Detective Chimp
In simpler terms, both the DC Universe and popular culture could greatly benefit from the presence of Detective Chimp, a character from DC Comics who would be ideally suited for an animated film. It’s not only his status as a talking animal that makes him appealing, but also because an animated movie would allow us to immerse his world in the atmospheric tones and visual styles characteristic of film noir.
4) Green Lantern
2026 will see the introduction of John Stewart and Hal Jordan from the DC Universe in the HBO series “Lanterns,” which appears to offer a more earthbound interpretation of the Green Lantern lore centered around a mysterious event on Earth. If the executives at DC Studios aim for a wilder exploration of the cosmic adventures of the Green Lanterns, an animated movie could be the way to go. Drawing inspiration from the animation style of “Spider-Verse” would suitably capture the boundless potential of the Green Lantern rings and space voyages, serving as a refreshing contrast to the upcoming live-action adaptations on HBO.
5) Hoppy the Marvel Bunny
As a movie enthusiast, if I were in DC Studios’ shoes, I would propose an imaginative approach to blend the Shazam!/Captain Marvel mythos with the DC Universe – an animated film centered around Hoppy the Marvel/Shazam Bunny. Animations featuring talking animals are quite prevalent in today’s cinematic landscape; Hoppy could seamlessly fit into this popular trend. Moreover, employing a stylized animation reminiscent of the Spider-Verse would allow for vibrant visuals and a plot as fantastical as bestowing divine powers upon a rabbit.
6) Gotham City Sirens
Introducing Harley Quinn in cartoon form during the era of “Batman: The Animated Series” was a huge success. Why not also have her first official appearance in the DC Universe be through animation as well? Additionally, having her lead an animated film adaptation of Gotham City Sirens, featuring her alongside Selina Kyle/Catwoman and Poison Ivy, could prove to be a thrilling prospect. For one reason, animation would provide a more convenient means to depict the intricate inner worlds of these three characters. Another advantage is that it would set this version of Catwoman apart from the ones starring in “The Batman” series.
7) Batman Beyond
It’s been suggested by one of the Spider-Verse producers that there could be a new animated Batman Beyond movie, but it seems unlikely it will happen right now. This is unfortunate since the concept art for the proposed project looks fantastic and a Spider-Verse-style animation would suit Batman Beyond well, given his success in animated TV shows in the past. Moreover, the futuristic setting of Batman Beyond would be more easily depicted through animation. If this project comes to life, it could have endless advantages.
