John Cena‘s WWE goodbye journey has taken an unexpected turn, starting at Elimination Chamber where he teamed up with The Rock and Travis Scott to defeat Cody Rhodes. However, since then, The Rock has been absent from WWE, and after WrestleMania 42, the same goes for Scott. In tonight’s SmackDown, Cena crossed paths with Rhodes ahead of their SummerSlam match, and not only did he appear to abandon his villainous character shift, but he also accused both The Rock and Scott of failing to keep their promises.
To begin with, Cena acknowledged the SummerSlam street fight taking place over the weekend. “Cody Rhodes,” he began, “I warned you I was too tired for a SummerSlam match, but you didn’t listen. You attacked me, faked my signature, and coerced me into one of the riskiest matches in WWE on its grandest stage for its top title. The only thing I have to say to you is ‘Thank you,’ because that was exactly the kick in the pants I needed,” Cena declared.
Just as one could predict, both the audience and Rhodes were taken aback, yet Cena persisted in discussing his latest choices and the remorse creeping up about the things he walked away from. It appears that what particularly weighs on him is doing something solely for the purpose of creating shocking television.
For a quarter of a century, I’ve consistently built a strong reputation through diligence, integrity, and regard. However, around five months ago, I unwittingly threw it all away while pursuing fleeting fame by supporting an outrageous notion to create sensational television. “And we succeeded,” Cena stated. “We astounded the world with our captivating content, but eventually, the excitement subsided and everyone returned to their normal lives. Those who were supposed to be on my side abandoned me, leaving me alone, struggling to maintain a facade of something that doesn’t align with who I truly am.
Later, Cena explained the reason behind his desire to depart with the Championship. “I want to go away from here with this trophy,” he said after his last match. “I long to bring this home with me, but not because I wish to damage wrestling. Goodness gracious, you all know I don’t want to harm wrestling; I adore wrestling. I want to take this home so that even when I’m gone, you won’t forget about me,” he added, seeming to realize his actions appeared foolish in the present moment.
You repeatedly tried to communicate with me, but I didn’t pay attention. Despite this, you persisted, Cody. You persisted even when I ignored you. You compelled me to confront the issue at hand. You goaded me into a conflict. Not a friendly contest, but an actual fight,” Cena stated. “This will be something tough and brutal. Something that will force me to uncover my true self. If I don’t participate in this battle, I shouldn’t be present at all. Make a note of it, August 1st, 2025, Newark, New Jersey – the day John Cena returns to WWE!
John Cena concluded his speech by throwing another jab at Scott and affirming that the genuine Cena had returned. “I’m not sure who will be victorious on Sunday, but I do know who will win – everyone in attendance! That’s because I’ve finally moved past my own nonsense, and for the first time, we get to witness Cody Rhodes go head-to-head against the greatest performer of all time at the peak of my abilities! You wanted a challenge in the main event street fight with no rules? Well, if you want it, come and get it! And on Sunday, the only hip-hop artist showing up to give your behind a thrashing is me. The Champion has arrived!
There are two possible scenarios here:
1. John Cena is sincere and genuinely returning to his heroic persona, or
2. He’s playing a trick on Rhodes and the audience, planning a surprise heel turn at SummerSlam.
If it’s the first option, this could potentially bring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson back into the storyline, either as an opponent for Cena, an ally, or even joining forces with another character.
As a die-hard fan, I can’t wait to find out what unfolds at SummerSlam! Whether it’s genuine or a clever ploy, this move has definitely added an extra layer of excitement. If it’s authentic, this could be one of the most sudden and impactful face transformations in recent history, given the “stunning TV” reference that seems to hint at real-life events. On the other hand, if it’s Cena trolling us, it certainly increases the anticipation leading up to SummerSlam and might serve as a powerful tool to strengthen his heel character in the long run.
