She’s creepy and she’s kooky, and she’s about to be back on screens.
In the Netflix series that premiered in 2022, Jenna Ortega’s portrayal of Wednesday left viewers equally enchanted and apprehensive. This reboot of the Addams Family, featuring the talents of Jenna, Christina Ricci, Fred Armisen, Luis Gúzman, and Catherine Zeta-Jones, has been captivating audiences for nearly three years now.
As we eagerly anticipate the arrival of Season 2 on August 6th, it’s only normal to wonder, “Hold up, now, what exactly unfolded in Season 1?” After all, keeping track of every detail in this fascinating world is part of our lifestyle as enthusiasts.
Rest assured, here’s your essential guide as we prepare to revisit Nevermore Academy, a school catering to the unusual.
Initially, we set the stage. On a Wednesday, Nevermore – the old school of Morticia and Gomez – welcomes its newest student. She arrives with a haughty stride, but hidden beneath is resistance that’s more like a silent protest than a scream. Eventually, she adapts to the customs, thanks in part to her werewolf roommate Enid Sinclair (played by Emma Myers) and fellow beekeeper Eugene Ottinger (Moosa Mostafa). They help coax her out of her protective shell, though it’s done more with persistence than ease.
It appears less grim when conversing with the local barista, Tyler Galpin, who happens to be Hunter Doonan.
The situation becomes sinister when Wednesday observes the gruesome demise of classmate Rowan Laslow at the paws of a monstrous creature – later identified as Hyde. However, attempts by shape-shifter Principal Weems (played by Gwendoline Christie) to conceal Rowan’s death fail, as attacks and strange occurrences persist.
On Wednesday, she starts having visions from her 1600s ancestor, Goody Addams. In these visions, Wednesday observes Goody confronting Pilgrim Joseph Crackstone, who is renowned as the founder of their town Jericho. However, contrary to his reputation, Joseph had brutally massacred a group of outcasts, including Goody’s mother, by setting them on fire inside a barn.
In the not-so-distant past, an old and unpleasant issue resurfaces when Morticia (Zeta-Jones) and Gomez (Gúzman) visit, leading to the unearthing of a decades-old accusation of murder against Gomez. While students at Nevermore, suspicions fell on Gomez for the death of Garrett Gates, a Crackstone descendant. Ever since, his family, including sister Laurel Gates, have experienced a string of mysterious and tragic deaths.
In this rephrased version, we find Morticia and Wednesday joining forces to clear Gomez’s name from accusations of murder, uncovering a concealed scheme by Garrett intending to eliminate the students at Nevermore Academy during their annual Rave’N dance. The incident occurred when Garrett crossed paths with Gomez; a vial in his coat pocket containing deadly poison shattered upon confrontation, leading to the unfortunate demise of the teen.
In light of my father’s acquittal, I find myself once again drawn into the enigma surrounding Goody and Crackstone. I am determined to untangle the threads of the past that weave through my present, even as I brush aside Dr. Kinbott’s inquiries and Marilyn Thornhill’s attempts at connection. To aid me in this quest, I enlist the assistance of Tyler, Eugene, and Enid.
Details about what Season 2 of the series will cover have been sparse, but Jenna hinted that it starts with her kidnapping. However, showrunner Miles Millar confirmed that the Laurel Gates-Crackstone narrative was designed for just one season.
He shared with Netflix’s Tudum that not every thread has been tidied up as perfectly as Wednesday believes, and he is fond of the concept of uncovering a fresh mystery.
The initial segment of season two for the show on Wednesday, starring Lady Gaga, starts streaming on Netflix on August 6th. This will be followed by part two on September 3rd. For a recap of all the instances when Jenna took on her on-screen persona in real life, continue reading.
The investigation uncovers a surprising fact: Laurel Gates is indeed alive, secretly orchestrating the events of the Hyde, despite her true identity being concealed.
Each Wednesday, my gut feeling led me to scrutinize a fellow classmate, Percy Hynes White, more closely. His persistent willingness to help, which seemed almost too good to be true, fueled my suspicions rather than alleviating them. Eventually, I stumbled upon compelling evidence suggesting he was the one we were searching for, leading to Percy’s arrest by none other than Tyler’s father, Sheriff Galpin.
In spite of her reservations, Wednesday’s bond with Tyler deepens. She even brings him along as her date to Rave’N dance (thanks to Thing’s reluctant assistance), and later shares a kiss with him in the café after hours. But the moment their lips touch, she has a startling revelation: Tyler is the Hyde. With a witty remark, Wednesday remarks, “It figures that the first boy I kiss would turn out to be a psychotic, serial-killing monster. I guess I have a type.
On Wednesday, she persuades Tyler to go to the school with her, eventually coercing him to reveal his true identity under duress. Believing she’s crossed a line, her friends inform Weems about her actions, leading to her expulsion and arrest. However, an unexpected turn of events occurs when Tyler confesses the truth to her in the police station while her hands are bound—a revelation that comes too late for Wednesday.
Catching up? Here’s another turn in the story: After an encounter with the Hyde, Eugene ended up in a coma. Upon waking, he accuses Ms. Thornhill, who we now know is Laurel Gates. In a confrontation, Laurel (also known as Thornhill) confesses to manipulating and controlling Tyler, followed by the murder of Weems and subduing Wednesday.
In the course of events, I unveil Laurel’s scheme – a daring attempt to restore Joseph Crackstone and annihilate Nevermore once and for all. This audacious plan hinges upon Wednesday’s life-giving essence, the key to resurrecting the deranged pilgrim.
After transforming into a werewolf, Enid confronts and overpowers Tyler. Meanwhile, Wednesday joins forces with the siren named Bianca, also known as Joy Sunday, to eliminate the pilgrim. Lastly, Eugene assists in defeating Laurel.
In the end, Tyler gets held, Xavier leaves prison, and the rest of the students return home because Nevermore won’t be operating for the rest of the academic term.
As an overly enthusiastic fan, I can’t help but share my anticipation for season two of this captivating series! Although specific details about its plot have been sparse, with Jenna hinting that the second chapter starts with her being kidnapped, showrunner Miles Millar has confirmed that the Laurel Gates-Crackstone storyline is a one-and-done arc for this season. I can hardly contain my excitement as we venture into new, unexplored territories!
However, he shared with Netflix’s Tudum that not every thread has been tidied up quite as neatly as Wednesday assumes. He also expressed his delight at the prospect of a fresh enigma.
In the initial segment of season two of Wednesday airing on Netflix, which includes performances by Lady Gaga, begins August 6, with part two following on September 3. For a retrospective look at instances when Jenna emulated her on-screen character in real life, continue reading.
