The Pros & Cons of an Absolute Justice League

DC’s Absolute Universe is causing quite a stir in the comic book world, but it’s not as simple as it appears at first glance. This new universe, fueled by the power of Darkseid, a New God and multiverse conqueror, presents an entirely fresh DC reality, featuring revamped versions of its characters – heroes, villains, and everyone in between. The Absolute DC saga began with the reimagining of DC’s Trinity (Batman, Wonder Woman, and Superman), followed by several other characters like The Flash, Green Lantern, Martian Manhunter, and recently, Green Arrow.

Ever since the debut of Absolute DC, fans have been eagerly anticipating the fusion of Absolute DC’s heroes that eventually leads to the creation of the Absolute Justice League. Given the Justice League’s reputation as a cornerstone team in the DC universe, it’s no surprise that an Absolute Justice League is on the horizon. But it’s essential to weigh the advantages and disadvantages of such a team, and determine how DC Comics can capitalize on its strengths while sidestepping potential weaknesses.

Pro – DC’s Absolute Universe Is Radically Different (& Begs for a Radically Different Justice League)

As a die-hard DC fan, let me tell you, the allure of DC’s Absolute Universe from the get-go was its daring reimagining of DC’s legendary superheroes, and boy, did it deliver! The unveiling of the DC Trinity – Batman, Wonder Woman, and Superman – presented each character in a refreshing new light. For instance, our Absolute Batman is a 24-year-old construction worker with a physique reminiscent of a powerlifter. Our Absolute Wonder Woman was molded as a warrior hailing from the depths of Hell itself. And the Absolute Superman? He’s Earth’s champion, fighting for the oppressed, equipped with an AI-enhanced super-suit. These transformations in the Trinity’s origins paved the way for everything that makes Absolute DC unique, and things have only grown more intriguing since then, as we’ve seen The Flash, Green Lantern, and a mind-boggling version of Martian Manhunter get their makeovers.

In the framework of DC’s Absolute Universe, which presents DC’s superhero roster in dramatically transformed versions, it would only make sense for them all to ultimately assemble in an Absolute version of the Justice League. Considering the Absolute Universe originates from the very essence of the League’s sworn foe, Darkseid, a reimagined Absolute Justice League that brings together every hero from this darker universe would be a significant opportunity to create comic book history. With the potential for an epic battle against Darkseid that such a team promises, it’s a chance too big to pass up.

Con – DC’s Absolute Universe Has Thrived on Individual Stories (& Introducing the Justice League Could Run Up Against That)

As a die-hard comic book enthusiast, I can’t help but feel a thrill at the prospect of an Absolute Justice League. However, transitioning from the vibrant individuality that characterizes the Absolute Universe into a collective heroic league would be quite a shift. After all, it’s the unique reinterpretations of each character in the Absolute Universe that have made reading these comics such a captivating experience.

In essence, the Absolute Universe functions as a blank slate in the comic book realm, allowing DC to dissect and reimagine their heroes with an intensity not often seen in modern times. Each superhero has been scrutinized, tweaked, and transformed in ways that feel fresh and unforeseen. These alterations in the Absolute Universe have left a lasting impression on me because of their originality and impact.

If the Absolute Universe had rebooted its storyline with the initial meeting of the Justice League, the changes made to characters like Batman, Wonder Woman, Superman, The Flash, Green Lantern, and Martian Manhunter would have remained important. However, these alterations might not have seemed as impactful because the Absolute Universe’s first tale was team-oriented. By focusing on each hero separately and providing them with extended solo storylines, DC’s Absolute Universe allowed each character to fully develop and transform into their Absolute versions. Once they formed a Justice League, the emphasis on individual characters would necessarily shift, potentially pushing the unique qualities that make DC’s Absolute Universe captivating into the background.

An Absolute Justice League Is Inevitable (but Has To Be Introduced Carefully)

Despite the possible disadvantage of replacing the personal narratives in Absolute DC with a team-centric approach, the enticing prospects and excitement of an Absolute Justice League are hard to turn down. Opting out of creating an Absolute Justice League would be a considerable missed chance, and just as in the main DC universe, there’s no reason why the characters’ individual stories couldn’t carry on alongside the Absolute Justice League. However, it’s essential to plan the formation of the League in the Absolute Universe cautiously, keeping in mind the most significant hurdle: that the Absolute incarnations of DC’s heroes would likely be the least inclined to form a Justice League.

The initial versions of Batman, Wonder Woman, Superman, Wally West, Green Lantern, and Martian Manhunter each have unique personalities that could affect their decision to join a team like the Justice League. For instance, Batman is often solitary and tough, while Wonder Woman was raised in a challenging environment that might make her distrustful of others. Superman tends to prefer operating alone, and Martian Manhunter has a background filled with paranoia. However, the formation of an Absolute Justice League in DC’s new alternate reality could be convincing if it realistically portrays these characters coming together as a team. This new league is expected to debut in DC Comics soon, especially after Green Arrow received the Absolute treatment. The transition from individual stories to team storytelling must be handled carefully to ensure the league’s formation feels authentic rather than contrived.
