Elden Ring Nightreign Reimagines a Classic Fromsoftware Gimmick for Everdark Sovereign Augur

In a new development, the game Elden Ring: Nightreign has unleashed a second wave of Everdark Sovereigns. The initial release was a revamped Augur expedition. This latest installment from FromSoftware includes an intriguing twist. Although Maris, Fathom of Night, hasn’t been particularly well-liked among the Nightreign Nightlord bosses by the community, it is one of the most tranquil characters. The Everdark version of the battle intensifies that sense of otherworldly cosmic peace.

After a swift defeat, the heavens grow gloomy, stars shine brightly, marking the start of the true battle. Maris towers over everything, as ominous as a fallen cosmic entity, eerily similar to the Elden Beast. However, players might have noticed that this time, Maris has an unusually high amount of health, raising suspicions. Then, a companion unleashes colossal waves of magic, spells seemingly more potent than any found in Elden Ring Nightreign. It’s at this point that Augur’s unique mechanic is revealed, and fans of previous games will immediately recognize the pattern unfolding.

The new Everdark cycle was released for Elden Ring Nightreign on July 31.

FromSoftware’s Storm Ruler Gimmick Is Back in Elden Ring Nightreign’s Augur Fight, and It’s a Sight to Behold

It’s highly probable that many players have progressed past Maris’ initial phase and encountered something peculiar: instead of the usual assortment of items from a weapon drop, they found a single item – a golden replica of their Nightfarers’ starting weapon. Since it doesn’t seem particularly remarkable, they might have overlooked it until their teammates started launching those blue streaks, and everything fell into place. However, once acquired, the battle transforms into a stunning cosmic dance between a dark entity and shimmering arcs of blue, reminiscent of Caligo’s boss fight in its cinematic flair.

The Everdark Sovereign Augur battle in Nightreign mirrors the Storm Ruler trick, a well-known weapon mechanic originating from FromSoftware, first seen in Demon’s Souls. In this game, players battling the Storm King boss needed the weapon to even land hits on the massive flying foe, and this concept has been a lasting influence on FromSoftware. In Dark Souls 3, players engaging Yhorm the Giant would compete for the Storm Ruler, building up its power to release gusts of wind against Yhorm. The Divine Dragon in Sekiro utilized a similar tactic, as it was defeated solely through lightning deflects. Even Elden Ring featured a rendition of this fight, as Rykard’s massive health bar could only be safely confronted with the strategically positioned Serpent Hunter spear.

Everdark Sovereign Augur Is a Good Way of Elevating a Bad Fight With a Good Gimmick

In the game Nightreign, Augur is typically viewed as the least formidable boss, and when it’s not weak, it can be aggravating due to its tendency to fly around the arena, making it difficult for melee characters to engage effectively. However, the Everdark Sovereign version of this fight manages to make Augur feel less like a nuisance and more like an enjoyable challenge.

In Nightreign, a tranquility often absent in fights is noticeable, and though typical gimmick bosses might not top FromSoftware’s list of best battles, this is an exception where the encounter becomes more enjoyable due to one such gimmick. Augur is the fourth boss to undergo the Everdark Sovereign transformation, with three more expected to receive the same treatment over the coming weeks. However, it’s unlikely we’ll see any more gimmicks in subsequent fights.
