Critical Role Reveals First Campaign 4 Details, with Brennan Lee Mulligan As GM

Enthusiasts of Critical Role have been eagerly anticipating updates regarding the upcoming main series campaign since the Hells Bells campaign concluded in February. Since then, they’ve enjoyed spin-offs and shorter series such as Wildemount Wildlings. However, during their August 2nd live show in Indiana, Critical Role has at last disclosed initial details for Campaign Four, and it seems that this new campaign will mark a significant change for the franchise and its followers.

In the upcoming Campaign Four, there will be some significant differences compared to past Critical Role adventures. To start, Matt Mercer, who has been guiding the storyline since the initial Critical Role campaign, won’t be in the Game Master (GM) role this time around. While Mercer has always been at the helm for the main series, other guest GMs have appeared in various spinoffs. Now, Brennan Lee Mulligan will step into the GM position for the new Critical Role campaign.

Mulligan has a lot of experience working with Critical Role and has become well-known in the tabletop role-playing game (TTRPG) community through his Dropout series and Dimension 20. Most recently, he played the endearing wizard Padmund Pondhop in Wildemount Wildlings. It may come as a surprise that Mulligan will be stepping in for Mercer during the next season of Critical Role, but it seems like a fitting choice. As Travis Willingham, CEO of Critical Role, explains, “Mulligan’s enthusiasm and dedication to world-building is contagious, and it’s been an absolute pleasure collaborating with him as we continue our journey.

Critical Role Steps Away from Exandria for Campaign 4 to Explore Something New

Instead of Brennan Lee Mulligan taking over as the GM for “Critical Role” Campaign 4 being the sole change, there’s also a shift in the campaign setting. Instead of the usual Exandria territory, fans will venture into an entirely new world. Although the specifics of this new setting haven’t been revealed yet, it’s certain that fans will experience something different from what they’re accustomed to. As “Critical Role” Creative Director Marisha Ray puts it, “Every aspect of Campaign 4 is fresh: a new world, a new tone, and new opportunities.

At present, we’re still unsure about who else might be part of the cast for the upcoming Critical Role campaign. If you’re eagerly awaiting Mercer’s return as a player, you’ll have to wait a bit longer for an official confirmation on whether he and other familiar faces from previous seasons will be present at the table this time. As for the game system that will be used in this next actual play season, it hasn’t been confirmed yet, so there’s much more excitement building about what’s coming up next for Critical Role‘s main series.

You don’t have to wait much longer to find out more! Critical Role Campaign 4 kicks off on October 2nd, airing live on Beacon.tv and streaming simultaneously on the official Critical Role YouTube and Twitch channels. As we approach the grand debut, we’ll be sharing more details about this new journey.
