A 19-Year-Old Rock Song Is Going Viral Thanks to Superman

Superman’s Steel Man has propelled a 19-year-old rock tune to Spotify’s number one spot, which is not surprising considering James Gunn’s history of incorporating music in his comic book productions, especially in the Guardians of the Galaxy series. It was no wonder that Superman’s soundtrack turned out well, as Gunn skillfully blended deep tracks with popular songs like “5 Years Time” by Noah & The Whale and even added a tune from fictional band The Mighty Crabjoys. However, one song in particular seemed to shine the brightest.

After the successful debut of Superman in the box office, the film has achieved another success by contributing to the rise of an older punk rock song to the top of music charts. According to Spotify’s Daily Viral Song Global chart, “Punkrocker” by Teddybears, featuring Iggy Pop, debuted at number two on the chart. The Netflix animated hit K-Pop Demon Hunters‘ song “Golden” took the top spot. Notably, “Punkrocker” is played towards the end of Superman, leading into the credits.

After the movie’s premiere, Iggy Pop commented on the film’s incorporation of his song, acknowledging that it had a touch of soul to it from the start. He further praised Superman as the best kind of friend, saying “Superman is the best friend you could ask for.” The song gained significant popularity after the release of Superman, with daily streams reportedly increasing from 1,572 to approximately 190,500 due to the film. This phenomenon was also observed with another song featured in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, “Brandy (You’re a Fine Girl)”, which similarly experienced an increase in streams following its inclusion.

In its second run at the box office, it’s predicted that Superman will rake in an additional $62.5 million this weekend, as the film’s popularity endures. This trend is likely to prompt moviegoers to look for the movie’s soundtrack, such as “Punkrocker”. Additionally, there may be a rise in attention towards Gunn’s playlists specially curated for the film, featuring songs like Against Me’s “I Was a Teenage Anarchist” and Jimmy Eat World’s “The Middle.”

Despite the fact that Superman has been a hit for DC Studios, it seems unlikely that it will receive a direct sequel, unlike other popular superhero films. Instead, Gunn and his team seem to be concentrating on developing the larger storyline for the DC Universe, rather than just producing sequels for each movie. For fans yearning to see more of Superman’s co-stars like Guy Gardner and Hawkgirl, they will have an opportunity in the upcoming second season of Peacemaker on HBO Max. Similar to Superman, the HBO Max series is recognized for incorporating some of Gunn’s personal music selections, such as “Pumped Up Kicks” by Foster the People and “Do Ya Wanna Taste It” by Wig Wam.

Under the guidance of James Gunn, the film titled “Superman” features Corenswet portraying the main character, Superman himself. Nicholas Hoult steps into the shoes of Lex Luthor, while Rachel Brosnahan takes on the role of Lois Lane, and Edi Gathegi plays Mr. Terrific. Nathan Fillion is seen as Guy Gardner, Isabela Merced embodies Hawkgirl, and Skyler Gisondo portrays Jimmy Olsen. You can catch this movie exclusively in cinemas now! The film’s soundtrack is already available for streaming and purchase on platforms like iTunes, Amazon, and any other retailers that sell soundtracks.
