A 2000s Cult Classic Sci-Fi Adaptation Just Arrived on Peacock (& We’re Still Waiting on a Sequel)

Peacock is now streaming a beloved sci-fi movie from the 2000s. Throughout April, the streaming service has added a lot of science fiction titles, including films like Hot Tub Time Machine and Interstellar. They also recently added an older adaptation of a well-known sci-fi story, which has gained a dedicated following, though fans are still hoping for a continuation of the story.

The movie The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, directed by Garth Jennings in 2005, is based on Douglas Adams’s popular book series. Starring Martin Freeman, Sam Rockwell, Zooey Deschanel, and Alan Rickman, it began streaming on Peacock on April 1st. The story follows Arthur Dent, an average Englishman, and his alien companion Ford Prefect as they journey across the galaxy aboard the Heart of Gold. They’re on a quest to find the meaning of life after Earth is demolished by the Vogons to make way for a new hyperspace route. While the filmmakers hoped to create a series of movies, the film received mixed reviews (a 61% score on Rotten Tomatoes) and didn’t earn enough money at the box office ($100 million with a $50 million budget) to make that happen.

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy Is a Quirky Adaptation That Still Holds Up

The 2005 film The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy is a standout in science fiction. It brought a quirky, British sense of humor to a genre often dominated by serious, action-packed blockbusters, and it successfully captured the playful spirit of the original book, even if it didn’t follow the story exactly. The film is full of wonderfully strange moments – from animated encyclopedia entries to a whale and flowers appearing in space – creating a fast-paced, funny adventure that’s still enjoyable today.

Beyond its famously eccentric style, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy is a truly memorable film that should have gotten a second installment. It’s visually stunning, cleverly combining traditional effects, puppets, and computer animation to create a distinctive, dreamlike world that feels both retro and futuristic. The casting is also brilliant, with Bill Nighy hilariously overplaying the role of the charming but unpredictable Zaphod Beeblebrox, and Alan Rickman perfectly capturing the gloomy personality of the robot Marvin with his voice acting.

What’s New on Peacock?

Peacock is adding a lot of great content in April! Along with the classic film The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, the streaming service is also including popular movies like Airplane!, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Dazed and Confused, Face/Off, Pulp Fiction, Space Jam, and Five Nights at Freddy’s 2. NBCUniversal plans to add even more titles before the month is over, including Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu on April 20th and the original Five Nights at Freddy’s on April 26th.
