On Disney+, there’s quite a buzz around the comedy movie “Freaky Friday.” Currently, it leads Disney+’s streaming charts as the most-watched film. The film’s renewed popularity isn’t entirely unexpected given that its sequel is due to hit theaters this weekend. However, the persistent popularity of “Freaky Friday” on the streaming platform underscores the enduring appeal of early 2000s nostalgia and its lasting impact. It appears fans are revisiting the original film in anticipation of seeing the sequel, which brings back Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis as they reprise their roles as the mother-daughter duo who switch bodies.
Title Swap: “A Magical Switcheroo in Freaky Friday”
In the movie titled “Freaky Friday,” Tess, played by Curtis, assists Anna, portrayed by Lohan, in looking after her daughter Harper (Julia Butters). Anna juggles her career, motherhood, and her approaching marriage to Eric (Manny Jacinto). Harper often clashes with her soon-to-be stepsister Lily (Sophia Hammons). However, after they all get their palms read at Anna’s bachelorette party, they find themselves swapped the next morning – Anna and Tess have become Harper and Lily, and vice versa. The sequel aims to surpass the original, and so far, it seems to be achieving that goal. As reported by Deadline, the comedy sequel is expected to earn a solid $30-32 million during its opening weekend. It has also received positive reviews, with a “certified fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an impressive 94% audience score.
As a die-hard movie fan, I’ve got to say it’s no surprise that Lindsay Lohan’s charm is still captivating audiences! Not only does her iconic film “Freaky Friday” hold the top spot on Disney+, but “The Parent Trap,” which premiered in 1998, is also making a comeback, sitting comfortably in fourth place. In this timeless masterpiece, Lindsay plays twin sisters Hallie and Annie who, after meeting at summer camp, pull off an ingenious plan to reunite their long-separated parents. Directed by the talented Nancy Meyers, “The Parent Trap” not only launched Lindsay’s career but has since earned a spot as a cherished millennial classic.
As a movie enthusiast, I must say that both “Freaky Friday” and “The Parent Trap” are modern-day adaptations of older films from the ’60s and ’70s, demonstrating that when skillfully executed, remakes and sequels can resonate with contemporary audiences. The initial success of “Freakier Friday” is a testament to this fact. However, there are other films like “The Devil Wears Prada,” “My Best Friend’s Wedding,” and “Bend it Like Beckham” that aim to replicate the same level of success. While some sequels and remakes may fall short, these timeless stories continue to captivate new generations.
The revival of the films suggests Lindsay Lohan’s resurgence in the mainstream media, who after a tumultuous teenage years filled with controversies and personal struggles, has now married, become a mother, and re-entered acting. Lohan recently appeared in Netflix Originals such as “Falling for Christmas,” “Our Little Secret,” and “Irish Wish,” demonstrating that she still possesses her acting skills and comedic prowess reminiscent of films like “Freaky Friday.” The success of these movies, both at the box office and on streaming platforms, implies that this might not be the end of Lohan’s career comeback.
Freakier Friday is now playing in theaters.
