The 1990s were a fantastic time for movies, especially crime films. The decade saw a huge surge in popularity for the genre, with everything from dark, stylish neo-noirs to thrilling heist movies – many of which are still considered classics. Now, as one of these ‘90s crime masterpieces is getting a new TV show, you can watch the original film on Hulu.
Kathryn Bigelow’s popular 1991 action film, Point Break, became available on Hulu on March 1st. The movie follows young FBI agent Johnny Utah (Keanu Reeves) as he goes undercover to investigate a group of surfing bank robbers, ultimately forming a complicated connection with their leader, Bodhi (Patrick Swayze). This addition to Hulu comes shortly after the announcement that the original film is getting a TV series reboot on AMC, produced by David Kalstein, after a previous attempt in 2015 didn’t come to fruition.
What Makes Point Break a Definitive 1990s Action-Crime Thriller?
Point Break remains a standout action-crime thriller of the 1990s, and for good reason. The film uniquely combines the excitement of bank heists with thrilling extreme sports like surfing and skydiving. Director Kathryn Bigelow’s energetic, practical filmmaking style brought both the realism of the crimes and the breathtaking action sequences to life, creating a truly immersive experience that influenced 1990s action movies. Beyond a typical cops-and-robbers story, Point Break also explores a complex, almost brotherly connection between Johnny (Keanu Reeves) and Bodhi (Patrick Swayze), two contrasting characters whose relationship adds surprising emotional depth.
The unique mix of genres in Point Break, combined with its perfect recreation of the early 90s California vibe – think sun-drenched beaches and a grunge-inspired style – helped turn it into a beloved cult classic. The original film remains unmatched, as evidenced by the failure of the 2015 remake, which lost money and received overwhelmingly negative reviews. A new TV series is in the works, but it’s being approached as a fresh start rather than a direct copy. Set 35 years after the original, the series will follow a new team of daring criminals who have connections to the infamous “Ex-Presidents” surfer gang.
What’s New on Hulu?
Hulu added a bunch of new movies and shows in March, starting with titles like Point Break, Cast Away, The Descendants, Fight Club, The Internship, Memoirs of a Geisha, Pearl Harbor, Ratatouille, and Silver Linings Playbook on March 1st. Throughout the month, they also added Killing Faith, Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret, and Anniversary. For TV, Hulu now has all of Sunny Nights Season 1, the premiere of Rooster Fighter, and the complete series of The Nanny.
