A Beloved Sci-Fi Series Finally Broke a Shocking 62 Year Streak

After 62 years, the most recent season of Doctor Who has managed to accomplish something truly extraordinary, defying all expectations and even seeming almost unreal. This is impressive given the series’ lengthy hiatus, reboot, and various changes in cast over the years. Notably, this achievement has been made amidst some debate about the show and its public response.

On a Wednesday, it became known that “Doctor Who” received an Emmy Award nomination for Best Choreography, specifically for the episode titled “The Doctor’s Chord,” within the segment “There’s Always a Twist at the End.” This is the first time the extended British television program has ever been nominated for an Emmy. Interestingly enough, the only other Emmy nomination for this science fiction series came from one of its video games, “Doctor Who: The Runaway,” which was recognized as Outstanding Derivative Interactive Program in 2020.

In “Doctor Who,” the first Emmy-nominated episode titled “The Doctor’s Chord,” takes us back to 1963 as The Doctor and his companion, Ruby, meet The Beatles. Along their time-traveling journey, they encounter the enigmatic Maestro who aims to eliminate music from existence by draining it. In this adventure, the Doctor and the Maestro engage in a musical showdown, with the help of the Beatles, who aid the Doctor in saving the day. The episode concludes with an extensive musical number to the song “There’s Always a Twist at the End.” To catch this episode, fans can tune into the second installment of the fourteenth season.

The Emmy nomination arrives when the future of “Doctor Who,” particularly in the U.S., is somewhat unclear. Last year, Disney formed a partnership with the BBC to broadcast new episodes of “Doctor Who” internationally on Disney+. This agreement allows the BBC to maintain full ownership of the cherished series, while expanding its reach beyond the UK and Ireland. However, the show has been surrounded by numerous rumors recently, some stating that Disney might terminate its partnership with the BBC following disappointing viewership figures. Yet, the BBC seems to have dismissed these claims.

The popular show “Doctor Who” concluded its latest season about a month back, ending with a significant surprise that left viewers both puzzled and thrilled. Ncuti Gatwa’s tenure as the Doctor ended after two seasons, leading to his character regenerating into an earlier “Doctor Who” cast member, Billie Piper, reprising her role as Rose Tyler. This unexpected turn of events has generated more questions than answers for the series, and unfortunately, viewers will have to wait to find out how it unfolds further.

At present, fans living outside of the UK and Ireland can find “Doctor Who” on Disney+ and get up-to-date with what they’ve missed before the next season begins. For those in the UK and Ireland, catching up on “Doctor Who” is possible via BBC and BBC iPlayer. The upcoming 77th Emmy Awards, to be hosted by Nate Bargatze, are scheduled for September 14th at the Peacock Theaters in Los Angeles. You can watch this event live on CBS, or stream it on Paramount+.
