The 1980s were a fantastic era for science fiction films. The decade delivered innovative special effects, hugely popular movies that shaped pop culture, and explored all sorts of sci-fi themes – from dark futures and alien encounters to time travel and beyond. Many iconic franchises launched in the ’80s are still beloved today, and now one of them is coming to Prime Video just before a new live-action series premieres on Amazon.
All three of the original RoboCop movies – RoboCop (1987), RoboCop 2 (1990), and RoboCop 3 (1993) – are now streaming on Prime Video. You can also find other RoboCop content on the platform, including the 2014 remake, the RoboCop: The Series TV show, the animated series RoboCop: Alpha Commando, RoboDoc: The Creation of RoboCop, and RoboCop: Alpha Command: Crash and Burn.
More RoboCop Is In the Works (But The First Movie Remains Unmatched)
It’s been almost 40 years since the original RoboCop film came out, but the franchise remains incredibly popular and continues to grow. Over the years, it’s expanded beyond movies into animated series, video games, comics, and more. Currently, a new live-action TV series is in development. Announced in 2024, the series will stream on Amazon MGM Studios, with Peter Ocko writing and showrunning, and James Wan executive producing. The show’s premise centers around a powerful tech company partnering with the police to create a high-tech law enforcer – a police officer who is both human and machine.
A new RoboCop series is planned, but it has a high bar to clear to reach the quality of the original film. The first RoboCop told the story of Alex Murphy, a Detroit police officer who is fatally wounded and then resurrected as the cyborg law enforcer RoboCop by the powerful Omni Consumer Products corporation. It was a fresh and thrilling idea, enhanced by its action and often intense violence. While some criticized the violence, audiences loved the film, making it a box office hit and a popular home video release, which led to several sequels. However, the original remains exceptional. Beyond the action, it’s a surprisingly thoughtful film, offering sharp satire and prompting viewers to consider complex questions about power, corporate greed, and what it means to be human. Nothing since has quite captured its unique blend of elements, even within the RoboCop franchise itself. The film’s themes still resonate today, and the original RoboCop is truly a masterpiece—and it’s currently available to stream on Prime Video.
