Fans of dark thrillers are celebrating the free streaming release of a series that even impressed Stephen King. Back in 2019, the author publicly expressed his enthusiasm for the show, excitedly anticipating the third season. While inspired by popular crime dramas like CSI and Without a Trace, this series takes things further with intense emotional depth, shocking violence, and stunning visuals. It’s exactly the kind of show we need more of.
The Finnish crime drama Sorjonen, known as Bordertown internationally, centers around detective Kari Sorjonen. He’s a seasoned, somewhat troubled investigator who relocates from Helsinki to his wife’s hometown of Lappeenranta with his family. His wife, Paulina, is recovering from brain cancer, and their teenage daughter, Janina, both struggle with Kari’s emotional distance. He often throws himself into work, solving crimes, then retreats home to quietly revisit the details in his mind. All three seasons are currently available to watch for free on Tubi.
The Crime Genre Needs More Shows Like Bordertown
Each episode features different crimes, and some are surprisingly violent. The show’s eerie and beautiful music helps balance this, especially during scenes focusing on the characters and the stunning Finnish scenery. The performances are notably subtle – a departure from typical American dramas – which can be unexpected, but ultimately makes the emotional scenes more impactful. Like many Nordic noir series, the show feels deliberate and thoughtful, while also building suspense masterfully.
Detective Inspector Kari Sorjonen is a brilliant but unusual detective, following in the footsteps of other famously eccentric investigators. As critic Sean Axmaker notes, he’s incredibly skilled at solving cases, but struggles with social interactions. The series, created by Miikko Oikkonen, portrays Sorjonen as a complex and layered character. One viewer gave the show 4.5 out of 5 stars, praising Ville Virtanen’s performance as a deeply traumatized and emotionally convincing detective on the autism spectrum. They highlight his unique ability to notice details others miss, while also being unable to manage personal relationships. With a strong supporting cast and the city of Lappeenranta playing a key role, the show is described as excellent Nordic noir, featuring well-written and paced episodes that will keep viewers engaged.
