Horror fans have had a fantastic year, with films like ‘Sinners and Weapons’ proving popular. However, 2024 is shaping up to be one of the best years for the genre in recent memory. Last year saw several critically praised horror movies, including ‘Nosferatu,’ ‘The Substance,’ and ‘Late Night with the Devil.’ But there’s one movie from last year that didn’t get as much attention at the time that’s definitely worth watching now that it’s available to stream for free.
Caroline Lindy’s first feature film, *Your Monster*, starring Melissa Barrera (known from *Scream*), is a fantastic but often overlooked movie. It’s a fresh take on the classic *Beauty and the Beast* story, based on Lindy’s earlier short film from 2019. You can now stream it on Kanopy, starting October 3rd. Kanopy is a great streaming service that’s often underappreciated – and it’s free if you have a library card!
In the film *Your Monster*, Barrera plays Laura Franco, an actress whose world falls apart after a breakup and a cancer diagnosis. Returning to her childhood home to heal, she unexpectedly finds a strange and unsettling, yet endearing, monster hiding in her closet. The film also features Tommy Dewey, Edmund Donovan, Kayla Foster, and Meghann Fahy.
Your Monster Is a Box Office Flop That Deserves Your Attention
I have to say, even though *Your Monster* didn’t make much money in theaters – around $759,000 – that really doesn’t say anything about how good it is! Everyone – both critics and regular moviegoers like me – agrees it’s a fantastic film, full of heart and genuine charm. It’s officially “Certified Fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes with a 78% rating from critics (based on 98 reviews!) and an even *better* 85% score from the audience. If you enjoyed movies like *Lisa Frankenstein*, *Warm Bodies*, or *The Shape of Water*, you absolutely *need* to check this one out!
Your Monster is a uniquely captivating film that blends dark humor, romance, horror, and even music into a surprisingly touching story. It centers on a woman who learns to embrace her anger, which takes the form of a monster, and finds inner strength through this acceptance. The movie skillfully balances comedy and heartfelt emotion while exploring serious themes like cancer and trauma. Ana de Armas gives a standout performance, showcasing her impressive acting range and solidifying her position as a leading horror actress.

More scary movies are coming soon, including *V/H/S* on October 17th, *Triangle* on October 24th, and *The Monkey* – one of last year’s best horror films – on October 31st.
