A Criminally Underrated ‘90s Sci-Fi Horror Classic is Coming to Free Streaming (And There’s Two Ways to Watch It)

Science fiction is hugely popular at the cinema, and the 1990s were a particularly strong period for the genre. The decade brought us iconic, blockbuster films like The Matrix, Jurassic Park, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Total Recall, and Independence Day. While many of these were massive successes, some great sci-fi films didn’t get the recognition they deserved. Now, one particularly overlooked sci-fi horror movie from the 90s is becoming available to stream for free in April, and viewers will even have two different platforms to choose from.

The sci-fi horror film Event Horizon, a cult favorite, will be available to stream on both Tubi and Kanopy this April. It’s already on Tubi as of April 1st, and will be added to Kanopy on April 17th. Kanopy is a free streaming service with no ads, offering a wide range of films and documentaries – all you need to access it is a library card or university login. Event Horizon, directed by Paul Anderson, is set in 2047 and follows astronauts investigating a spaceship that mysteriously reappeared after being lost for seven years. The film stars Laurence Fishburne, Sam Neill, Kathleen Quinlan, and Joely Richardson. While it wasn’t a success when it was first released, it has since gained a dedicated following as a cult classic.

Event Horizon Failed At the Box Office But Is a Chilling Sci-Fi Horror (And Has a Comic Book Sequel)

When Event Horizon was first released, it wasn’t well-received by either audiences or critics. Many found it dull and overly graphic, criticizing its focus on style over a compelling story. The film’s box office numbers reflected this initial disappointment. However, over time, viewers have begun to appreciate the film, particularly considering the limitations of its setting. Event Horizon is largely confined to a spaceship – the titular Event Horizon – which vanished years prior. This small, enclosed space creates a naturally claustrophobic atmosphere that quickly spirals into a disturbing and nightmarish horror. While the film does feature a significant amount of gore, it feels justified by the terrifying situation the astronauts face, transforming the story into a kind of haunted house mystery set in space.

It’s interesting how Event Horizon wasn’t a hit when it first came out in the 1990s, but it’s become a beloved cult classic today. The story isn’t finished either! Last year, IDW released Event Horizon: Dark Descent, a comic book prequel that shows what happened with the ship’s original crew. And this month, a sequel comic series, Event Horizon: Inferno, is coming out, set 200 years after the movie. It follows a billionaire trying to recover the ship, but things are bound to go wrong. Both comic series have been very popular, with Inferno already breaking sales records before its release. Now is a great time to revisit the original movie, especially since it’s currently available for free streaming.
