For horror fans, the 2000s brought a new wave of films. Coming after the slasher craze of the 90s and before the more sophisticated horror of the 2010s, this decade was known for its graphic violence, many remakes, and the introduction of international ghost stories and supernatural thrillers to American audiences. It was a significant time for the genre, producing a lot of memorable movies – and one particularly beloved film from the 2000s is now available to stream for free while fans eagerly await a potential sequel.
The 2009 horror comedy Jennifer’s Body, directed by Karyn Kusama and written by Diablo Cody, has become a defining horror film of the decade, and it’s now streaming on Tubi. The movie follows popular cheerleader Jennifer Check (Megan Fox) who transforms into a demon after a ritual goes wrong, and it’s up to her best friend, Needy Lesnicki (Amanda Seyfried), to stop her. While fans have been waiting for Jennifer’s Body 2, a sequel is finally in the works. In the meantime, you can stream the original film on Tubi as of March 1st.
Jennifer’s Body Was Ahead of Its Time
Released in 2009, Jennifer’s Body actually feels surprisingly modern. Often dismissed as just another horror film exploiting its female lead, it’s now recognized as a clever and insightful feminist statement. Director Karyn Kusama uses horror not just to frighten, but to explore the complexities of being a teenager, particularly focusing on issues like trauma, harmful friendships, and how women are often viewed by men. The film is a bold and rebellious take on female anger and empowerment, offering a fresh perspective by showing Jennifer through the eyes of women, all wrapped up in a fun, over-the-top Y2K aesthetic, plenty of gore, and memorable performances from Megan Fox and Amanda Seyfried.
I’ve always felt Jennifer’s Body was seriously misunderstood. It just didn’t connect with audiences when it first came out – it only made $31 million at the box office despite costing $16 million to make, and critics weren’t kind, giving it pretty low scores on Rotten Tomatoes (47% from critics, 36% from audiences). But over the years, people have really started to get it, recognizing it as a smart and feminist film. It’s become a cult classic, which is amazing, and I’m so thrilled to hear that Jennifer’s Body 2 is finally happening, with Diablo Cody writing the script again! It’s about time this movie got the recognition it deserves.
