With the recent finale of My Hero Academia, a major gap has opened up in the anime landscape. Although there’s still one more special episode coming and a spin-off series already into its second season, the end of Deku and UA Academy’s story leaves a void. Fortunately, a brand new superhero anime has just begun, potentially stepping up to fill that space and introduce a fresh team of heroes.
Unlike My Hero Academia where almost everyone develops superpowers called Quirks, the new anime Scum of the Brave has a different premise. This series focuses on a world where mafia members can transform into powerful beings called “dark lords,” and bounty hunters with superpowers are hired to take them down. While it doesn’t center around a school like UA Academy, Scum of the Brave features young heroes eager to improve their skills and fight the mob. They’re in luck, too – one of the strongest heroes is taking on a new student. You can watch the trailer below, and the first episode is now streaming on Crunchyroll.
The Mob Vs. Super Heroes
Although My Hero Academia and Scum of the Brave are quite different anime, they both feature elements of the mafia. A key similarity appears in My Hero Academia’s fourth season with the villain Overhaul. Unlike previous villains like All Might and Shigaraki, Overhaul was connected to the Japanese mafia and aimed to build a criminal empire by exploiting the power of a young girl named Eri. He sought to create a weapon capable of nullifying Quirks, making him a formidable threat who briefly matched the strength of the League of Villains’ most powerful members.
Looking for a new anime to watch? Crunchyroll describes Scum of the Brave as a supernatural action series set in a futuristic Tokyo. In the mid-21st century, members of the mafia can transform into powerful beings, and specially trained individuals called Braves are tasked with hunting them down. The story follows Yashiro, a cynical Grim Reaper, who reluctantly takes on Aki, a high school student determined to become a Brave. Together, they investigate a series of increasingly difficult and strange cases, marking the beginning of a quirky master-apprentice relationship.
I’m so excited about Scum of the Brave! It actually started as a light novel series way back in 2016 by Rocket Shokai. And get this – it’s his second major anime adaptation this month! He’s the creator behind Sentenced to be a Hero too, which is blowing up right now and getting amazing reviews from fans – seriously, it’s almost perfect!
