An iconic character from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, who hasn’t been on screen for some time, is making a comeback. However, this return isn’t quite like the one fans witnessed in cinemas as recently as 2021. Looking back to that era, it was approximately two years post the release of Avengers: Endgame, and the MCU was stepping into an era of fresh faces taking over from veterans. Characters such as Iron Man, Captain America (Steve Rogers), and Black Widow had bid their farewells, paving the way for a new wave of heroes to step up. This specific character starred in their own MCU film but has been absent since then. Now, a comic book adaptation of this character is being introduced, albeit with some changes compared to our previous memories of them.
Marvel recently unveiled a sneak peek of Deniz Camp’s, Von Randal’s, Erick Arciniega’s, and VC’s Travis Lanham’s work on Ultimates #15. This new issue finds the Ultimates returning to the location where they were nearly killed by the Hulk. However, thanks to Doom and his use of the Immortus Engine, time was rewound, saving the team from certain death. The action-packed battle between the Ultimates and Doom unfolds in the ancient city of K’un-Lun, a place with intriguing connections to the Master of Kung Fu, Shang-Chi. As we delve into the history of this remarkable location, we discover its fascinating ties to the martial arts master.
Shang-Chi Makes His Ultimate Universe Debut
In the Ultimate Universe, one of the initial transformations for Shang-Chi is renaming him Sheng Qi, The Miraculous. He boasts numerous prestigious titles, such as being the eighth bearer of the Iron Fist and the mightiest warrior the heavens have ever beheld. During the Celestial Tournaments, Sheng Qi demonstrated his lethal prowess among the Immortal Weapons, with a few of his victorious battles briefly showcased.
In the Ultimate Universe, Shang-Chi is rechristened as Sheng Qi, The Miraculous. He boasts an impressive resume including being the eighth Iron Fist wielder and the most formidable warrior ever seen by the heavens. During the Celestial Tournaments, his skills as a deadly Immortal Weapon were evident, with some of his easy wins briefly highlighted.
Previously called Shang-Chi, this man once commanded Heaven’s troops in a resounding victory against an army of demons from the Eighth City. It seems that his strength and ruthlessness as a warrior may surpass that of his counterpart in the primary Marvel Universe in the Ultimate Universe. However, while wading through a river of blood, Shang-Chi took a life-altering step to reject violence. Eventually, he renounced Heaven, Hell, and all existence, standing amidst an endless pile of human and demon remains.
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Shang-Chi was generally avoidant of conflict, resorting to fighting only when necessary. However, when his father, Xu Wenwu, threatened the magical village of Ta Lo with the Ten Rings, Shang-Chi bravely confronted and overcame his father. The post-credits scene of “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” hinted at significant developments for Shang-Chi’s future. Unfortunately, after almost five years, there has been no further development in this regard.
As a dedicated cinema enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share some exciting news about Shang-Chi’s potential future in the MCU. It appears that Simu Liu, our beloved Shang-Chi actor, is gearing up for a new adventure – this time, he’s joining forces with the Avengers in the highly anticipated film, “Avengers: Doomsday.” Instead of reprising his role in a sequel to “Shang-Chi,” Simu Liu will be battling it out alongside the Avengers against Robert Downey Jr.’s formidable Doctor Doom.
This news is significant for several reasons. First, it marks the return of Downey Jr. to the MCU, a moment that many fans have eagerly awaited. Second, the Russo brothers, directors of some of the most successful MCU films, are back at the helm for “Doomsday.” Although Shang-Chi’s name may not be in the title, the star power and anticipation surrounding this movie could potentially draw a massive audience.
A notable change in the characterization of Ultimate Shang-Chi is his renunciation of violence, which stems from the heavy burden of death and carnage he has caused. Exhausted by it all, Shang-Chi has decided to turn away from violence. As for how this will play out in Ultimates #15, that remains to be discovered. The heroes are readying themselves for the return of The Maker, the villainous Reed Richards who created this world. In the latest issue, they have welcomed a new Hawkeye (Charli Ramsey), America Chavez, She-Hulk, and Luke Cage into their ranks, so there’s speculation that Shang-Chi may also join them. Interestingly, Shang-Chi appears to be depicted as a young boy on the cover of Ultimates #15.
