The 2010s were a golden age for movies adapted from young adult novels, particularly in the science fiction and dystopian genres. Popular films like The Hunger Games, Divergent, and The Maze Runner transported audiences to often dark and challenging worlds where societies or the environment had crumbled, forcing characters to fight for survival. While many of these films were released during that decade, not all were hugely successful – and one had an unexpected link to the Marvel universe.
Released in 2016, The 5th Wave is a movie based on the popular novel by Rick Yancey. The film stars Chloe Grace Moretz as Cassie Sullivan, a teenager fighting to survive after waves of alien attacks have destroyed much of the world. While critics weren’t impressed, the movie did well in theaters, and now you can watch it for free on Tubi and decide for yourself if it’s worth a watch. The cast also includes Nick Robinson, Ron Livingston, Maggie Siff, Alex Roe, Maria Bello, Maika Monroe, and Liev Schreiber.
The 5th Wave Has a Surprising Marvel Connection (But Still Failed to Launch a Franchise)
I was really excited about The 5th Wave when it came out, hoping it would become the next big franchise like The Hunger Games. The book series had so much potential – there were two sequels already written, and a whole epic storyline about Cassie and the fight for humanity’s survival! It was a shame, then, that the movie didn’t really take off despite doing okay at the box office. They just didn’t make any more films, which was a huge letdown, especially knowing how talented everyone involved was.
The film began with a promising script from Akiva Goldsman, an Academy Award winner for A Beautiful Mind and experienced in science fiction, having written for films like I, Robot and I Am Legend, as well as the TV show Fringe. It also had a boost from a well-known superhero actor: Tobey Maguire, best known as Spider-Man, was a producer. Despite this strong start, the film didn’t quite take off, but it’s not necessarily a bad movie – it may have simply been released at the wrong time.
The 5th Wave has all the elements you’d expect from a young adult dystopian thriller – a strong, clever female lead and a fight for survival. When it was first released, it got lost in a crowd of similar movies. But now, with fewer films in the genre available, it has a chance to stand out, especially since it’s free to stream on Tubi. The timing couldn’t be better, as fans are excited about the new Hunger Games movie and interest in these kinds of stories is growing again.
The 5th Wave is now streaming for free on Tubi.
