The latest episode of The Simpsons featured a character who hasn’t appeared in 32 years—and it was easy to miss! Season 37 has brought some fun changes and unexpected team-ups with the show’s familiar characters. The season has also been looking back at the show’s history, bringing back some forgotten characters from the past.
The latest episode of The Simpsons Season 37 surprised viewers by exploring a new backstory for the character Bumblebee Man. The episode also celebrated the show’s Mexican heritage characters, acknowledging that there haven’t been many over the series’ long run. As a humorous nod to this, and a way to briefly revisit them, Homer’s forgotten little brother, Pepi, made his first appearance in 32 years – since Season 4.
Pepi Returns in The Simpsons 32 Years Later

I recently watched The Simpsons Season 37, Episode 12, titled “¡The Fall Guy-Yi-Yi!” and it was a fun one. Homer gets recruited to be the stunt double for Bumblebee Man – and it’s pretty great! Bumblebee Man is voiced by Humberto Vélez, who’s been the Spanish voice of Homer for years, so it’s cool to hear him in English. The show really takes off thanks to Homer taking all the hits, becoming especially popular in Mexico. It was nice to see all the characters with Mexican heritage that The Simpsons has introduced over the years get some spotlight too.
It’s surprising how few characters The Simpsons consistently uses. While familiar faces like Dr. Nick Riviera and Julio Franco reappear, many characters only appear once, such as Isabel Gutierrez (voiced by Eva Longoria) and Señor Ding Dong. The biggest surprise, though, is Pepi, who hasn’t been seen at all since a 1993 episode. His return is a funny way to point out just how limited the show’s cast of relevant characters is, especially when it comes to Bumblebee Man and his world.
Who Is Pepi?

First shown in the fourth season 32 years ago, the episode “Brother From the Same Planet” centers around Homer and Bart reluctantly participating in a Big Brother/Little Brother program. While they both initially join under false pretenses, they are paired with seemingly ideal matches. Homer gets a sweet little brother named Pepi (who Homer playfully calls Pepsi), a boy from a less fortunate background who idolizes him. However, the relationship doesn’t last, and Pepi ultimately ends up becoming close with Bart’s Big Brother, Tom.
Pepi was a unique character whose storyline ended when his relationship with Tom – as adoptive father and son – concluded. He hasn’t appeared in decades, making his recent cameo on The Simpsons – even as a playful nod to the show’s limited Mexican representation – a surprising and unexpected return for fans.
