A Guide to Francis Ford Coppola’s Surprising & Sprawling Family Tree

The mantra of The Godfather was “never go against the family.”

Fortunately for Francis Ford Coppola’s descendants, his children Roman Coppola and Sofia Coppola, as well as granddaughter Gia Coppola, all pursued careers in filmmaking, mirroring their esteemed father’s path.

And the 85-year-old couldn’t have scripted it any better.

Apart from regularly taking his wife, Eleanor Coppola, and their children along on filming locations, the winemaker would often extend invitations for family gatherings during the summers, which he referred to as a “creative season,” at his vineyard in Napa Valley each year.

In an interview with People magazine in April 2025, Francis mentioned that he and his peers used to perform one-act plays or compose songs, which he believes sparked their passion for artistic expression among the children.

Back in 2000, as I confessed to Interview, being near my father, a man who considers filmmaking the pinnacle of expression, has always kindled an insatiable curiosity within me.

Not that she had to join the family business, but it called to her all the same.

In an interview with The Talks in 2011, the director of Lost in Translation stated that he did not experience significant pressure and established his unique voice quite early in his career. He also expressed that while he takes pride in his family background, he has his own distinctive approach and style when it comes to work.

In simpler terms, the director of the 2024 production of “The Last Showgirl” mentioned that, although they are continuing to stage summer performances in Napa, this time they will be using genuine equipment, as opposed to improvised resources.

In an interview with The Times, she shared that our family is quite artistic and nurturing of creativity. She emphasized that this environment does not feel like a typical work or business setting at all.

Meanwhile, acting called to Francis’ nephews Nicolas Cage and Jason Schwartzman.

Jason, who has Talia Shire (Francis’ younger sister) as his mom, once stated on the show “Overheard With Evan Smith” in 2014, “I can’t put it into words. Perhaps it’s just something about families being tied to a specific profession… I was simply terrible at subjects like math.

Also, there’s much more depth to be discovered here. Much like a masterpiece by Francis Ford Coppola, immerse yourself in the expansive saga that unfolds within this comprehensive account of their family.

Francis Ford Coppola was born in 1939, being the second-born among the three kids of Carmine and Italia Coppola. Notably, Carmine went on to compose music for several of his son’s films, earning an Oscar for the soundtrack of The Godfather Part II.

Eleanor Coppola (formerly known as Neil), who served as the art director for Francis Coppola’s debut film, “Dementia 13,” was expecting their first child when they got married in February 1963.

In September, they welcomed their first son, Gian-Carlo Coppola, followed by another son, Roman Coppola, in April 1964, and a daughter, Sofia Coppola, in May 1971.

Their family expanded in September when their eldest son, Gian-Carlo Coppola, was born. Then, they had another son, Roman Coppola, in April 1964, and later a daughter, Sofia Coppola, in May 1971.

Both options maintain the original information while sounding more natural and easy to read.

As a die-hard admirer, I can’t help but gush over the remarkable journey of Francis Ford Coppola. In 1970, he claimed his first Academy Award for penning the powerful war epic “Patton.” After that, he didn’t stop there; instead, he delved into his own productions and soared to unparalleled heights. His masterpieces, “The Godfather” and its sequel, earned him an impressive four more Oscars for Best Director and Producer of the Best Picture winners. Simply put, Coppola’s contributions to cinema are nothing short of legendary!

During a phase of her life, Eleanor momentarily set aside her personal ambitions to focus on raising her family. However, her career as a writer and Emmy-winning documentarian, which included the 1991 film Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker’s Apocalypse, a documentary about the challenging production of her husband’s Apocalypse Now, experienced significant growth later in her life.

Following her passing in 2024 at the age of 87, Sofia confided to the New York Times an advice Eleanor had given her upon becoming a mother in 2006: “Secure an exceptional babysitter, allowing you to focus on your work without feeling remorseful.

In 2000, I openly acknowledged my initial unease when facing a camera to Interview magazine. However, I chose to step out of my comfort zone and position myself behind it instead. This decision proved pivotal, leading me to receive the Best Original Screenplay award for Lost in Translation in 2004. Not only did this recognition establish me as a filmmaker, but it also solidified my identity as a designer and style icon.

Sofia was married to Spike Jonze from 1999 until 2003. Later, she had two daughters with Thomas Mars, the lead singer of Phoenix. Romy Mars was born in November 2006, and Cosima Mars joined the family in May 2010. They officially got married in Italy in 2011.

2023 saw me, an overly enthusiastic admirer, managing to elicit a precious personal response from the typically reserved mom of Romy. This came about when Romy shared a TikTok video, expressing her disappointment at being grounded for attempting to charter a helicopter on her father’s expense, just to visit a friend.

Sofia told The Hollywood Reporter that making a video was a constructive way for Romy to rebel.

“But people discussing my parenting publicly,” she added, “is not what I would’ve hoped for.”

Gian-Carlo, seen on the right, seemed ready to dive into the family business, earning recognition as an associate producer for both “The Outsiders” and “Rumble Fish” in 1983. Unfortunately, his life was tragically cut short when he was involved in a speedboat accident in September 1986 at the age of 22.

At the time of his passing, he was eagerly awaiting the arrival of a baby with his fiancée and costume designer, Jacqui de La Fontaine. Their child, Gia Coppola, came into the world in January of 1987.

Though Gia was brought up near her father’s family, she initially had no interest in filmmaking; instead, she pursued photography at Bard College. However, the circumstances changed, and she found herself agreeing to direct an adaptation of James Franco’s 2010 book “Palo Alto” only when the stars aligned.

As a lifestyle enthusiast, I’d rephrase that statement like this: “Back in 2014, I shared with The Guardian that my loved ones were incredibly supportive. However, they also encouraged me to embark on this journey independently, without overstepping boundaries.

On a personal note, Gia tied the knot with artist Honor Titus in March 2023. A month after their wedding, they were blessed with their first child together, Beaumount, who became Francis’ first great-grandchild.

At the age of 18, Roman earned his initial production credit for the film “Rumble Fish,” a venture he’s continued to be part of within the entertainment industry ever since.

Besides working as a director himself, he has also worked in collaboration on many films directed by Wes Anderson. In the year 2013, they both received a nomination for the Best Original Screenplay award for the movie “Moonrise Kingdom.

Back in 2007, it was my privilege to step into the role as a partner alongside my wife, Sofia, at our family’s production company, American Zoetrope. This creative powerhouse was initially co-founded by none other than the legendary George Lucas and my father, making it a true treasure trove of filmmaking innovation.

Roman shares sons Alessandro and Marcello, as well as daughter Pascal, with wife Jennifer Furches.

As a devoted follower, I expressed my desire to my interviewer with The New Yorker in 2020, sharing that I aspire for my children to enjoy the same experiences I had as a kid, being immersed in my father’s movie sets. I even joked about how, back then, it was common for me to miss school when there were exciting events like napalm drops happening on set – a revelation that, looking back, seems quite extraordinary.

Francis’ elder sibling, August Coppola – a renowned professor of comparative literature – had three sons, Marc Coppola, Christopher Coppola, and Nicolas Coppola, with his first spouse, the dancer-choreographer Joy Vogelsang.

Their youngest first started acting as a Coppola before changing his name to Nicolas Cage.

In my own words, as someone who has earned an Oscar, I clarified to GQ in 2022 that my success wasn’t solely due to being born into the Coppola family. Rather, it was because I believed I possessed a distinct perspective on emotions and observations, a unique way of experiencing and viewing the world.

In the year 1990, the highly productive actor became a father to Weston Coppola Cage with his girlfriend Christina Fulton. Following the dissolution of marriages with Patricia Arquette and Lisa-Marie Presley, he welcomed son Kal-El into the world in 2005 with his third spouse, Alice Kim.

In 2016, they finalized their divorce, and his brief marriage to Erika Koike, which lasted only a few days, ended in an annulment in 2019.

In 2021, I, a devoted admirer, had the sheer joy of witnessing Nicolas tying the knot with the radiant Riko Shibata. The following year, our hearts overflowed as we welcomed their precious bundle of joy, August – named in honor of his dear late father – into our lives. A truly magical moment that I will cherish forever!

Francis has a younger sibling named Talia Coppola, who was born in 1946. After she got married to composer David Shire in 1970, she started acting professionally under the name Talia Shire.

Or more briefly:

Francis’ younger sister, Talia Coppola (born 1946), took on the stage name Talia Shire after her marriage to composer David Shire in 1970 and began her acting career.

The actress who starred in Rocky was expecting her son Matthew Shire when she went to the 1975 Academy Awards, nominated for Best Supporting Actress for The Godfather Part II. She gave birth to him in September of that year.

Following the finalization of my divorce with David two weeks ago, I exchanged vows with esteemed producer Jack Schwartzman in the heart of August 1980. Remarkably, this union took place just two months after the arrival of our cherished son, Jason Schwartzman.

In 1982, they warmly embraced Robert Schwartzman as a new family member. Additionally, Talia views John Schwartzman, a cinematographer, and Stephanie Schwartzman, a set designer (from Jack’s earlier marriage), as extended members of her own family.

Jack died of pancreatic cancer in 1994. He was 61.

In 2016, Matthew tied the knot with Kate Gersten, who penned the screenplay for Gia’s recent film “The Last Showgirl”. They had met two years earlier in the writers’ room of Amazon’s series “Mozart in the Jungle”, co-created by Roman and Jason.

The members of Matthew’s family, similar to the rest, maintain a high level of privacy regarding their children. However, it is known that they possess not one but two sons.

Jason made his acting debut at 17 in 1998’s Rushmore and he never stopped.

In 2019, he openly confessed to the media outlet Independent that he lacked the courage to believe he could have a career in Hollywood due to his background. He also expressed that he doubted his chances of being cast in films, stating, “I didn’t believe I would be given the opportunity to be part of movies, genuinely.

One thing that left no room for doubt: His unwavering affection for Brady Cunningham, his artist wife and the mother of his two daughters and son.

Initially, Robert hadn’t envisioned a career in acting, but he unexpectedly gained YA-classic status following his portrayal of Mia’s suitor Michael in “The Princess Diaries.” (Notably, the reason for Michael’s absence from the sequel was due to his being on tour with his band, and that band happened to be Rooney.)

He did grow up wanting to make movies and has directed several, starting with 2016’s Dreamland.

In the year 2017, Robert tied the knot with photographer Zoey Grossman. Notably, in February 2022, she disclosed that they had become parents to twin boys named Lennox and Nino.
