A lesser-known movie from acclaimed director David Cronenberg is gaining popularity. Originally released 21 years ago, it’s now finding success on streaming platforms.
As a big movie fan, I’ve been checking what’s trending, and I’ve noticed A History of Violence is doing really well on HBO Max! FlixPatrol says it’s currently the eighth most-watched movie on the platform here in the US. It’s a fantastic crime drama from 2005, if you haven’t seen it. Sadly, it’s not available on HBO Max everywhere – but it is streaming on other platforms in different countries, which is good news!
A History of Violence Has a Secret DC Comics Connection
The film A History of Violence centers around Tom Stall, played by Viggo Mortensen, who is a quiet diner owner. When he bravely defends his restaurant from robbers, he’s hailed as a hero. But this attention unexpectedly reveals a hidden and dangerous past – Tom Stall is actually Joey Cusack, a former and ruthless mobster, and his family and community begin to uncover the truth.
Many viewers don’t know that David Cronenberg’s 2005 crime film is actually based on a DC Comics series. While it doesn’t involve typical superheroes or villains with powers, the movie draws heavily from “Torso,” a comic created by John Wagner and Vince Locke and published by DC in 1997.
As a film buff, I really enjoyed A History of Violence when it came out, and critics generally agreed – it scored an 88% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It even racked up a couple of nominations at the Oscars, with William Hurt getting recognized for his supporting role and John Olson for the screenplay. Financially, it did pretty well too, earning over $61 million worldwide on a $32 million budget – a solid return!
Why Is a History of Violence Suddenly a Streaming Hit?
It’s surprising to see A History of Violence becoming popular on streaming services so long after its original release. But there’s a simple explanation: the movie became available on HBO Max on June 8th, introducing it to a whole new audience who clearly enjoy it, as evidenced by its rising popularity.
The recent streaming popularity of A History of Violence coincides with a turnaround for DC films. With James Gunn now leading the studio, DC is working to rebuild its reputation after a period of disappointing movies. Films like Superman are attracting audiences back to the DC universe, and that includes renewed interest in older favorites like A History of Violence.
A History of Violence is available to stream on HBO Max.
