The first season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms concludes with a short scene after the credits, and the show’s creator, Ira Parker, has explained its significance. This practice of adding extra scenes after the credits has become popular, largely due to Marvel’s use of them for jokes and hints about future storylines. While Game of Thrones didn’t typically use these scenes, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is trying it out – this one is more of a quick addition than a full post-credits scene, but it’s meant to be both a funny moment and a clue about what’s to come. Spoiler alert: the following discusses the ending of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 1.
After the episode’s closing credits, a scene shows Maekar Targaryen discovering Egg has run off, and he angrily demands, “Where the fk is he?!” This moment differs from George R.R. Martin’s book, The Hedge Knight, which suggests Maekar actually allowed Egg to leave with Dunk. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, showrunner Parker explained this change and how it will affect the second season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
We’re aiming for each of these stories to be self-contained. Like the novellas they’re based on, each season with Dunk and Egg will feature a new setting and a complete story arc. While there’s a small connection to previous events, we want to avoid creating large, overarching plotlines that would change the scope of season two. We will acknowledge this connection, but we hope it won’t distract viewers from enjoying ‘The Sworn Sword.’
What This Means For A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms Season 2
It’s likely that Season 2 of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will need to address this change. The show is diverging from the source material, and a key plot point involves a special signet ring given to Egg by Maekar. Egg keeps the ring hidden for emergencies as a way to prove who he is. Because of the changes made in the show, the writers will need to explain how Egg acquires this ring.
This situation needs to be resolved because of its effect on the relationship between Dunk and Egg. Egg previously risked Dunk’s safety by lying, and he apologized for it. Now, he’s essentially done the same thing again, and it’s likely the truth will come out, forcing them to confront the repercussions of Egg’s choices once more.
Don’t expect to see Maekar appear in person, though. He wasn’t in the second book of the series, and actor Sam Spruell has confirmed he isn’t filming for Season 2. While things could potentially change, production is already underway, suggesting a return isn’t planned. The show could address his storyline through conversations rather than a direct appearance, staying faithful to the original story. Regardless, even if Maekar doesn’t reappear, his impact should still be felt throughout the season.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 2 will release in 2027 on HBO and HBO Max.
