A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Officially Sets Up The Return of 1 Targaryen From Game of Thrones

In Season 1, Episode 3 of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, titled “The Squire,” the show hints at the potential arrival of another Targaryen character. The Game of Thrones prequel has already featured several Targaryens, including Prince Baelor, the future king, and his brothers Maekar, Valarr, and Aerion. However, the show wasn’t finished expanding the Targaryen family just yet. Please be aware that the following contains spoilers for Episode 3.

In “The Squire,” it’s revealed that the character known as Egg is actually Aegon Targaryen. He’s been hiding his true identity by shaving his head and harbors resentment towards his brother, Aerion. However, Aerion isn’t his only sibling. There’s also the oldest brother, Daeron, who is currently missing and has a reputation for heavy drinking. Another brother is mentioned by Raymun Fossoway with harsh words: “The third’s so useless, they were gonna ship him off to a Citadel to make a Maester of him.” Though unnamed, fans of Game of Thrones will recognize this character as Maester Aemon of the Night’s Watch.

Will Maester Aemon Appear In A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms?

Aemon is only a few years older than Egg, placing him at about eleven years old during the first season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Although Raymun suggests otherwise, records show Aemon had already been sent to the Citadel in Oldtown. His grandfather, King Daeron II, sent him there because the Targaryen family was so large – Daeron had four sons, and three of them already had children of their own.

Even though Aemon doesn’t appear directly in the novellas the show is based on (The Tales of Dunk and Egg), he is mentioned. The stories reveal that characters visited him in Oldtown after the events of Season 1 – specifically, Aemon measured Dunk’s height – and the show could easily include this scene. Showrunner Ira Parker has previously hinted at bringing Aemon into the series and seems receptive to the idea. When asked by Screen Rant about including familiar characters, and specifically mentioning the Maester, he said:

We’re planning to reveal names and faces of people involved in this project soon, and we hope to share more details as things progress.

He won’t become the Maester of the Night’s Watch for many years – not until 233 AC, which is about 24 years after the first season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Even so, he’s a significant character in the Game of Thrones story, and a brief appearance would be a simple way to connect the shows without feeling unnatural.

Another Game Of Thrones Targaryen Should Also Appear In A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms

Even if Aemon Targaryen doesn’t make an appearance, the upcoming series A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms should feature a Targaryen character from Game of Thrones—and someone who also appears in House of the Dragon. It shouldn’t be Daenerys, but rather Brynden Rivers, also known as Bloodraven, or as many viewers remember him, the Three-Eyed Raven. While his past identity wasn’t explicitly stated in Game of Thrones, it was heavily implied (and is also suggested in the books, where he’s called the Three-Eyed Crow). However, a vision Daemon Targaryen has in the season finale of House of the Dragon makes it clear that Brynden Rivers and the Three-Eyed Raven are the same person.

Long before becoming the Three-Eyed Raven and disappearing beyond the Wall, Brynden Rivers – one of King Aegon IV Targaryen’s illegitimate sons – held powerful positions. He served as Hand of the King and spymaster to King Aerys I Targaryen, who ruled after Daeron II. This will happen shortly after the events of Season 1. Brynden also plays a key part in the third of George R.R. Martin’s Dunk and Egg stories, The Mystery Knight, suggesting he’ll definitely be featured in Season 3 of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
