Be warned – spoilers follow for the season 1 finale of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms! The next journey for Dunk and Egg in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has already been planned.
Ira Parker, the creator of the Game of Thrones spinoff, has shared that the second season will bring the show’s two main characters to a significant place featured in the original Game of Thrones series. The first season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms concluded with Dunk and Egg setting off on a new journey after leaving Ashford, and they considered several destinations, including the southern region of Dorne.
In an interview with Variety, Parker revealed that the second season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will follow Dunk and Egg as they journey to Dorne. He explained this storyline mirrors the events of The Sworn Sword, the second book in George R.R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg series, and that each season of the show will cover a different book in the series.
Okay, so yes, we absolutely head to Dorne this season! How much of that storyline we explore… well, you’ll have to watch to find out! I’m not sure how much I’m allowed to reveal right now. Generally, we’re sticking pretty closely to the source material. Season one was based on “The Hedge Knight,” and season two adapts “The Sworn Sword.” Fingers crossed we get a season three, because if we do, we’re aiming to cover “The Mystery Knight.”
Season one of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms adapts the story from The Hedge Knight, the first book in George R.R. Martin’s three-part series. The show has made a few changes to the original story, which have been well-received by both critics and viewers on HBO and HBO Max. Thankfully, future seasons seem to be staying true to the source material.
As Dunk and Egg travel to Dorne, it’s uncertain which characters from the first season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will reappear. Though the story primarily follows Dunk and Egg, some characters like Ser Lyonel Baratheon and Raymun Fossoway might not return. The first season does suggest that the Targaryen family will play a larger role in future storylines.
The season 1 finale revealed that Egg’s father, Maekar Targaryen, had discovered his son was gone. This was surprising, considering Egg had told Duncan his father gave him permission to travel across the Seven Kingdoms (though the show hints there are actually nine). This sets up exciting new storylines and opportunities to bring back Targaryen characters in the future.
According to Parker, plans for a third season of the show are already well underway. Martin wants to adapt the entire Dunk and Egg novella series, potentially with six to twelve stories in total. Beyond some preliminary titles, details haven’t been released yet.
With season 2 of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms taking Dunk and Egg to Dorne, the show sets the stage for their future adventures. While the overall storyline will be recognizable to those who’ve read the books, the specifics could change depending on how their journey unfolds.
