The fifth episode of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 1, titled “In the Name of the Mother,” contains the show’s biggest surprise so far. While the Game of Thrones prequel has been different from the original series, this episode starts to feel more like the epic storytelling fans remember. The episode centers around a trial by combat, where Ser Duncan the Tall and six others must fight against a team led by Princes Aerion and Daeron Targaryen – with much of the focus being on Aerion. Be warned: spoilers follow.
As is typical for Westeros, not everyone survives. At first, the casualties appear limited to Ser Humfrey Bessbury and Ser Humfrey Hardyng, who both died in battle. However, the situation quickly escalates when Baelor Targaryen removes his helmet to reveal a fatal head wound inflicted by his brother Maekar’s mace. Showrunner Ira Parker discussed the significance of Baelor participating in the Trial of Seven and how his death echoes Ned Stark’s fate in the first season of Game of Thrones, in an interview with EW:
Ned Stark was more trusting and less aware of potential dangers than Baelor Targaryen. Baelor isn’t oblivious to the risks he faces; instead, he feels compelled to live up to a lifelong expectation – a reputation established since he and his brother, Maekar, fought in the Battle of the Redgrass Field during the Blackfyre Rebellion, where they were known as ‘the hammer and the anvil.’
He became a hero and saved the kingdom at a very young age. Everyone constantly praised his honor and predicted he’d be the greatest king Westeros had seen since the original conqueror. But eventually, he faced a real test of his values. True character can only be proven through difficult challenges; honor that isn’t tested isn’t real honor.
Bertie Carvel, the actor who plays Baelor, spoke with EW about how Baelor’s death echoes Ned Stark’s. He noted that while the Stark and Targaryen families are different, there’s a clear connection between the two deaths.
Did Maekar Mean To Kill Baelor? What Actor Sam Spruell Thinks

Baelor’s death was a surprise, but even more shocking was the killer: his own brother, Maekar. He struck Baelor in the back of the head with a mace, and the blow proved fatal. According to the story, Maekar insists he didn’t mean to kill Baelor, though he anticipates many will believe he did. Actor Sam Spruell mentioned they deliberately wanted to explore this ambiguity.
We explored different possibilities regarding Prince Aemond’s actions – was killing his brother an accident, or intentional? I found it really interesting to discuss this with both Ira and Sarah [Adina Smith, the director of episode 6]. There’s a strong motivation within Maekar to be the heir, and his brother’s death would make that happen. So, any remorse or sadness he feels is overshadowed by the fact that he’s now next in line for the throne.
Just to clarify, in the books, when Baelor dies, his sons Valarr and Matarys are next in line for the Iron Throne, not Maekar. Baelor and Maekar’s other brothers, Aerys and Rhaegal, are also ahead of him. However, after several deaths occur, Maekar eventually does become king, about twelve years after the events of the first season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
This death is a major turning point for the show, instantly raising its stakes and quality – it’s comparable to the most impactful moments in Game of Thrones. It powerfully demonstrates the unforgiving nature of Westeros and confirms that no character is truly secure. For Dunk, this loss should reinforce the importance of the values he already possesses – the same ones that motivated Baelor’s actions – as a way to continue serving and honoring Baelor’s memory, potentially setting up a continuing presence for his legacy in Season 2 of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
The first season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms concludes on Sunday, February 22nd, at 10 p.m. Eastern Time on both HBO and HBO Max.
