A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms showrunner confirms show’s fate after adapting published Dunk and Egg novellas

Ira Parker, a showrunner for the ‘Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ series, has shared that George R.R. Martin has developed concepts for several additional novellas, which could potentially be used for upcoming seasons of the show.

As a huge fan of the author, I’m thrilled about the new series! So far, he’s written three fantastic ‘Dunk and Egg’ novellas. The first season is going to be based on ‘The Hedge Knight,’ which came out way back in 1998. They’re currently filming season two, and that’s going to adapt ‘The Sworn Sword’ from 2003. And if the show does well, we might even get a season three based on ‘The Mystery Knight,’ published in 2010. I’m already counting down the days!

When asked if A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms could expand beyond its current three novellas, similar to how Game of Thrones went beyond George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire books, producer Mark Parker told TopMob magazine he’s suggested the idea to HBO multiple times, though the response has been a mix of encouragement and skepticism.

He explained that he envisions making several films now with the young actor, Egg, and then revisiting the project in five to ten years to create more films with Egg as he grows up. He anticipates continuing this pattern – returning after another five to ten years to film with Egg again, this time as an adult, and potentially revealing a significant plot twist involving his character.

The good part is we already know how the story ends and the paths the characters will take. We won’t have to invent things as we go, just work with a more flexible plan than the one we currently have.

We’re aiming to create three installments, and that will likely be the complete story. We want people to enjoy that as their full experience with the Dunk and Egg world.

If George decides to write more, we’re open to talking about it. Personally, I could write about these characters and this world endlessly – I enjoy them that much.

Taking place roughly 90 to 100 years before the story of Game of Thrones, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms centers on a knight named Dunk and his clever young squire, Egg – secretly Prince Aegon Targaryen – as they travel across the Seven Kingdoms.

Martin had previously written in a blog that the new show stays very true to the source material, as much as anyone could expect.

The next issue of TopMob magazine, coming out on January 20th, will feature a complete interview with Ira Parker.

The new series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, will debut on Sky Atlantic and NOW on January 19, 2026. It will also be available on HBO in the United States.

You can watch all eight seasons of Game of Thrones and the first two seasons of House of the Dragon on Sky and NOW. If you’re interested in subscribing to Sky TV, you can find more information about signing up.
