Even though ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms‘ is the most accurate adaptation of the story from ‘Game of Thrones’ seen so far, the show’s creator, Ira Parker, has confessed to making one alteration from the original book that he now regrets.
As a huge fan, I’ve been following the latest episodes of that HBO fantasy show, which are adapted from George R.R. Martin’s ‘The Hedge Knight.’ It’s been fun seeing everyone discuss details, and some really observant viewers spotted something missing from one of the conversations – a line of dialogue that didn’t make the cut.
During the story, as Dunk travels to the tournament, many common people call out to him. This surprises him, and he turns to Steely Pate, asking, “Why are they doing that? What do they see in me?”
Steely Pate responds: “A knight who remembered his vows.”
In a recent Reddit Q&A, a fan called a particular part of the story its most important element and wondered why Parker had chosen to omit it.
He admitted it was his fault, saying mistakes happen on any show. The scene had been written into the script at one point, but was later removed. He believes the idea of a knight honoring his commitments is still central to the story, even though he mistakenly omitted the scene. He explained that while it wasn’t directly stated, the character Dunk’s behavior still reflects that core value.
During the same Q&A session, Parker also confessed to another oversight: he forgot to include the personal crests of Aerion and Maekar in the show.
After a fan mentioned the issue, Parker admitted they hadn’t noticed it either. He said, “Fans have already pointed out two errors in the show that I missed. This is one of them. They definitely should have given Maekar a different… something to make him stand out in the fog. My mistake!”
Parker has consistently stated his commitment to staying true to the source material, even telling TopMob that the first season was specifically written with Martin in mind.
He clarified that this role doesn’t focus on appealing to everyone, as people have very diverse tastes.
When writing, it’s important to have a specific reader in mind. With the first season, I really focused on writing for George. ‘The Hedge Knight’ is a project he’s particularly proud of – he’s even said he believes it’s his best work.
