*Warning: Spoilers ahead for the finale episode of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 1.*
Fans of ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ are bracing for a major change: a prominent character won’t be returning for season 2.
Unlike the original story by George RR Martin, the season 1 finale shows Maekar (Sam Spruell) discovering his youngest son, Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell), has run off to travel with Dunk (Peter Claffey).
The book suggests Maekar agreed to it, but the TV show definitively shows he did not.
The recent alteration led us to question whether Maekar would return in season two, but Sam Spruell has since stated he isn’t currently scheduled to appear in the next season.
He shared with TopMob that he isn’t currently planned to be in the second season, but he personally hopes his character, Maekar, returns – admitting it’s a somewhat selfish wish.
I really enjoy playing flawed fathers – characters who constantly mess up and then see those same mistakes mirrored in their kids. It’s a particularly heartbreaking dynamic to explore.
I found the dynamic between Maekar and Egg really compelling, especially how Egg’s strength subtly undermined Maekar’s power. I particularly enjoyed seeing that conflict play out, and I’m hoping the character returns in future stories.
Maekar isn’t featured in the second season because the story follows George R.R. Martin’s novella, ‘The Sworn Sword.’ In this tale, Dunk and Egg embark on a new journey and become involved in a conflict between Lady Rohanne Webber and Ser Eustace Osgrey.

Season 2 is currently filming, with showrunner Ira Parker teasing a little of what’s to come.
He explained to TopMob that the second book is set during a drought. He pointed out that Belfast is unsuitable as a filming location because it rains there daily. Therefore, they’ll be searching for a location that doesn’t experience rain – a place where they can convincingly portray a drought.
The showrunner hinted to TopMob and other media that Egg will become more involved in the action during the second season. They mentioned that Dexter has been training Egg and expects viewers will be surprised by their performance.
