Sam Spruell, who plays a character in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, is sharing his thoughts on how the season ended. He explained why his character, Egg, made a surprising and debated decision, and how that choice highlights the complicated relationships within the Targaryen family.
Sam Spruell on why Egg lied in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ ending
As a huge fan of ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,’ I was really intrigued by Sam Spruell’s take on Egg’s decision in the finale. He shed some light on why Egg felt he had to lie about getting his father’s permission to ride off with Ser Duncan the Tall – it really made the moment make so much more sense!
In the last episode, Egg departs with Duncan, having told him that Prince Maekar had agreed to let him remain as his squire. However, this approval wasn’t real. Actor Ty Tennant Spruell explained to The Hollywood Reporter that this reveals Aegon’s ability to recognize who will be a better father figure to him.
The actor explained that Duncan has an innate wisdom that young Maekar immediately notices. He said, “Duncan’s wisdom is just natural and intuitive, something Maekar will likely never achieve.” Spruell also pointed out that Egg has a clear idea of the person he aspires to be.
He explained that Aegon realizes he needs to align himself with Dunk instead of his father to achieve his goals, which is deeply upsetting to Maekar. He hopes future installments of the story will delve into Maekar’s resulting distress and feelings of inadequacy.
This episode showcases the tension brewing within the Targaryen family. We see how much Egg resents Aerion when he attempts to kill him, entering his brother’s room armed with a knife. Their father, Prince Maekar (played by Sam Spruell), intervenes and stops him.
After the final events, Egg slips away to resume his journey with Ser Duncan the Tall. Maekar doesn’t realize Egg has left, and the episode ends with him angrily demanding to know Egg’s whereabouts.
