Now that the third ‘Knives Out’ film, ‘Wake Up Dead Man,’ is playing in theaters and will soon be available on Netflix, writer and director Rian Johnson has been promoting it and discussing the future of Daniel Craig’s character, detective Benoit Blanc. A popular idea circulating online is a ‘Knives Out’ movie featuring the Muppets, and Johnson has said he’s a big fan of the concept, but…
People often suggest a Knives Outstyle movie with Muppets online, and I wanted to explain why that probably wouldn’t work. I really love both Muppet movies and the Benoit Blanc mysteries, and they’re just too different in tone. Putting Muppets in a Knives Out setting would mean they’d be getting killed, which doesn’t feel right. You could* put Benoit Blanc in a Muppet movie, and that would be fun, but it would change what we expect from his character. Ultimately, I’d really prefer to make a classic, great Muppet movie!
I’ve been hearing the director talk about these movies, and it’s so cool to learn how much thought went into them! He’s a huge fan of murder mysteries, just like me, and apparently he’d been brainstorming ideas for about ten years. He finally got to write one after Star Wars, thinking it would be a standalone project. It’s amazing how that ‘little murder mystery’ turned into a whole trilogy!
