A new installment of the horror story, “The Amityville Horror,” is being developed as another film. According to Deadline’s recent announcement on Tuesday, this upcoming movie is already in production with directors Joseph and Vanessa Winter at the helm. They will write and direct the feature based on their original screenplay. The new film promises a fresh take on the classic haunted house tale, tailored for modern audiences. The project is expected to move quickly into production later this year. Notably, the directing duo gained fame for their SXSW found footage horror movie titled “Deadstream,” which has received significant praise since its debut.
This is the newest addition to a series that boasts more than 50 parts, but only five have been shown on the big screen so far. The first movie, “The Amityville Horror,” debuted in 1979 and grossed $86.4 million globally. It was succeeded by two more films from Orion Pictures: “Amityville II: The Possession” in 1982, and “Amityville 3-D” the following year. A reboot with Ryan Reynolds in the lead role appeared in 2005, raking in $65.2 million worldwide. Another film emerged in 2017 as “Amityville: The Awakening,” but it was only screened in ten theaters and made a disappointing $8.4 million globally.
The upcoming movie won’t rehash the earlier films or follow Jay Anson’s popular novel. Instead, it will delve into the actual supernatural events that inspired those narratives. According to reports, this new version aims to provide a fresh perspective on the Amityville house and the public-domain legend surrounding it. The events we’re referring to date back to 1974 when Ronald DeFeo Jr. murdered his family in the Amityville house at 112 Ocean Avenue. Later, George and Kathy Lutz moved into the same house and claimed they encountered paranormal activities. This new horror rendition won’t focus on the DeFeo murders or the Lutz family stories.
In 2022, their first movie, Deadstream, was first shown at South by Southwest and later released on Shudder, a horror streaming service. Before working on Deadstream, they had previously directed a segment called “To Hell and Back” for V/H/S/99. This segment was premiered in 2022 at the Toronto International Film Festival as well.
BoulderLight Pictures, responsible for the successful movie “Barbarian”, and Divide/Conquer, known for “Heart Eyes”, are joining forces to create the upcoming Amityville Horror film. As of now, no studio has been officially tied to this new adaptation; however, it’s anticipated that BoulderLight will initially offer the project to New Line Cinema due to their existing first-look agreement. The goal is to secure a suitable production environment soon, with plans to start filming before the end of the year, potentially leading to a release in the following year.
Currently, there’s no confirmed release date for the latest “Amityville Horror” film. In the meantime, enthusiasts can get acquainted with the works of the Winters family by streaming “Deadstream” exclusively on Shudder. If you’re interested in the original “Amityville Horror,” it’s available for streaming on Netflix, while the remake starring Reynolds can be found on HBO Max.
