Fans won’t have to wait long for the new animated series Spider-Noir, which promises a unique take on the Spider-Man mythos. Unlike previous versions, this series focuses on a different Spider-Man, Ben Reilly, and features a dark, classic noir style. Like many Spider-Man heroes, this version of Ben, voiced by Nicolas Cage, is troubled and grappling with deep personal issues while trying to protect the city. While the show is expected to explore these struggles, some early details hint at a well-known fan prediction.
The new issue of Empire magazine offers a preview of Spider-Noir, revealing a deeply affected Ben Reilly. This version of Spider-Man, nicknamed ‘The Spider,’ is a world-weary, cynical private detective operating in 1930s New York. He’s depicted as someone who drinks, smokes, and isn’t afraid to use harsh language—but he still has superpowers. Like previous Spider-Men, he’s also dealing with a significant personal tragedy.
Has Gwen Stacy Died In the Spider-Noir Universe?

A popular theory about the Spider-Noir series suggests Gwen Stacy actually died before the show began. This would explain why Ben Reilly seems so emotionally damaged. The trailer shows scenes of Cat Hardy that strongly resemble the comic book version of Gwen Stacy’s death, leading fans to believe Ben is haunted by Gwen’s passing and imagines Cat facing a similar tragedy. While it’s unconfirmed, the fact that Ben is grieving a significant loss adds an interesting layer to his character.
I’ve been wondering if Gwen Stacy might show up in Spider-Noir, and honestly, it wouldn’t shock me. Given the show’s vibe, I’m guessing Felicia Hardy – Black Cat – will be a key character, maybe even a classic femme fatale. I have a feeling Ben Reilly will get really involved with her, and then start to worry about putting her in danger, like he’s stuck in a pattern where anyone he cares about ends up hurt. It’s a pretty classic noir setup, and I’m really curious to see if that plays out.
Most Spider-Man fans know the story of Uncle Ben’s death, which motivates Peter Parker to become a hero. Even in the movie Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Spider-Man Noir mentioned his Uncle Benjamin as his inspiration. However, the upcoming Spider-Noir series likely won’t include that same story. Nicolas Cage isn’t returning as the Spider-Man Noir from Into the Spider-Verse; this is a new version of the character with a different past. While this Spider-Man may have been motivated by loss, it doesn’t need to be the same loss we’ve already seen. This older, more world-weary Spider-Man is likely dealing with a more recent tragedy.
Overall, Spider-Noir looks like one of the most compelling comic book adaptations in recent memory, and Nicolas Cage’s portrayal of a desperate Ben Reilly is particularly intriguing. The show has established his character as a classic, hardened detective – a familiar trope in noir stories – which is a welcome change for the superhero genre. While many Spider-Men have faced great loss, this version explores trauma in a unique way, positioning Ben Reilly’s past experiences as a central challenge he must confront throughout the series.
