When the “Minecraft” film debuted in April, a unique trend started in cinemas that culminated in an unprecedented amount of popcorn being thrown. This was largely due to a brief Chicken Jockey scene featuring Jason Momoa’s character encountering a zombie on a chicken. The scene quickly became viral, sparking an online trend where people mimicked this action by tossing whatever they were holding in the air. Now, you’ll have to part with your money to grab the Minecraft Movie Chicken Jockey action figure, which is an SDCC 2025 exclusive priced at $34.99. You can pre-order it now on Entertainment Earth while supplies last. It won’t be delivered until June 2026, but you won’t be charged until it’s shipped.

The craze of Chicken Jockey took off, moving from theater to theater and flooding social media with videos. During a specific scene in the movie where Momoa encounters Chicken Jockey, spectators participating in the trend are supposed to toss their food or drink, as well as any chickens they’ve brought to the screening. Yes, you read that correctly. The trend was quite wild, causing people to be divided on their opinions about it. Even the director of the Minecraft movie, Jared Hess, commented on it.
I find it quite amusing when the fun we’re having gets the attention of the authorities,” I shared with Entertainment Weekly. “It’s oddly humorous because what seems to be mere cheering and tossing popcorn is apparently causing a stir, enough to warrant police intervention over popcorn! It’s simply ridiculous, isn’t it? But honestly, it’s the absurdity of it all that tickles me. I’ve come across so many hilarious videos online. It’s wonderful, especially when folks are hoisting each other onto their shoulders to get a better view and stand up to cheer during those electrifying moments. The collective anticipation is like nothing else. Yet, I’m just grateful that people are creating lasting memories with their loved ones.
Movie theater workers may not have appreciated the fun-filled trend, as it resulted in a significant increase of messy theaters nationwide. Diego Peralta from Comicbook argues that a few viral videos don’t justify additional work for individuals unrelated to the incident. Now that the fad has subsided, let’s shift our focus towards cherishing the ideal action figure instead.
