The spotlight seems to be on Doctor Doom, even though he hasn’t officially appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe yet. His presence appears to be foreshadowed through hints and rumors. In the post-credits scene of Captain America: Brave New World, The Leader speaks about mysterious entities planning to disrupt the multiverse, which some believe is a veiled reference to Doom. Similarly, there’s speculation that Doctor Doom could be the one behind the ship seen in the post-credits scene of Thunderbolts, given the “4” on the side of the vessel, possibly hinting at his arrival on Earth-616.
It’s indisputable that Doom will lock horns with Earth’s strongest champions in Avengers: Doomsday, yet his reasons behind this confrontation still puzzle us. Given the extraordinary abilities of Franklin Richards from the Fantastic Four, it’s plausible that Doom targets them, but there is no Franklin on Earth-616. Another character who could catch his eye is missing at present.
Mantis Is Part of a Major Prophecy in Marvel Comics
Similar to her movie version, Mantis from Marvel Comics shares ties with the Celestials. Raised by the Priests of Pama, she’s fated to become the Celestial Madonna, a being said to bring forth the savior of the universe. This significant role attracts Kang’s attention, as he aims to prevent any obstacles from interfering with his scheme for conquest across multiple realities. On several instances, he attempts to eliminate her, but she manages to survive thanks to the Avengers’ aid. Later, she delivers a child and entrusts its care to the Cotati while she ventures into space. Unlike in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Mantis in the comics has a child, but she’s currently solo-exploring the cosmos, potentially leaving her exposed for an attack by Doom.
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Doom is set to assume Kang’s role, suggesting it might be beneficial for him to eliminate potential adversaries. Mantis, who possesses half-Celestial powers due to her father being Ego, remains formidable even after his demise, capable of going toe-to-toe with heavyweights like Thanos. With Mantis as an ally, Doom could potentially control the entire galaxy. However, he’ll face significant resistance in acquiring Mantis’ allegiance since a powerful group of heroes are fiercely devoted to safeguarding their friend.
The Guardians of the Galaxy Aren’t Going to Let Anyone Hurt Mantis
In the finale of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, the main group goes their separate ways. Drax and Nebula elect to remain on Knowhere, caring for the young ones, while Rocket, Groot establish a new Guardians squad along with Adam Warlock, Kraglin, Cosmo, and Phyla-Vell. Simultaneously, Peter Quill returns to Earth to reside with his long-lost grandfather, whom he hadn’t seen since his childhood days. The post-credits scene of Vol. 3 hints that Star-Lord is the only confirmed Guardian character destined for future appearances within the MCU, leaving the fate of the rest uncertain. However, there’s a possibility to resolve this conundrum, as Peter and Mantis develop a bond by the end of The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, suggesting they may share a familial connection.
If Peter learns that his sibling is in peril, he’ll reunite his old friends for a final adventure. Given her connection with the Guardians established in Vol. 3, Gamora may feel compelled to leave the Ravagers and join them. It’s clear that Doomsday will require many hands to manage, as the Avengers, Fantastic Four, and X-Men will all be involved. However, Marvel Studios won’t assemble the MCU without involving the Guardians. Fortunately, it’s straightforward for them to become part of the story by making Mantis a crucial element in Doom’s scheme.
Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18, 2026.
