Now, a live-action adaptation of a classic Ghibli film is in development, and it’s taking an interesting approach – similar to a recent Neon Genesis Evangelion announcement, it will be presented as a kabuki performance.
Next year, Studio Ghibli’s beloved anime film, Princess Mononoke, will be adapted into a live-action kabuki performance. Kabuki is a traditional Japanese theater style known for its dramatic performances, vibrant costumes, and striking makeup, performed exclusively by male actors. This new adaptation will be staged in July and August at the Shinbashi Enbujo theater in Tokyo, Japan. Danko Ichikawa will play the hero Ashitaka, and Nakamura Ichitaro will portray San. Although performances haven’t been scheduled for North America yet, a previous kabuki adaptation of Studio Ghibli’s Spirited Away did make its way to Western audiences.

The Stars of Princess Mononoke Kabuki Speak
Actor Danko Ichikawa recently shared a touching personal connection to Princess Mononoke after being cast in the Super Kabuki production. He explained that he listened to the film’s theme song, “The Legend of Ashitaka,” when his grandfather passed away, and it brought him a sense of hope during a difficult time. He feels this connection makes the role feel destined. His grandfather was the creator of Super Kabuki, envisioning a vibrant and modern take on the traditional art form. Ichikawa sees performing Princess Mononoke as a Super Kabuki production as a particularly meaningful way to honor his grandfather’s legacy, and he aims to create a performance that appeals to both Kabuki and Ghibli fans alike, ensuring it’s enjoyable for everyone.
Actor Nakamura Ichitaro also expressed their enthusiasm for joining the “Super Kabuki” production, alongside commentary from Danko. Ichitaro admitted to feeling both nervous and excited about performing “Princess Mononoke” next year. They recalled seeing the film as a child and being impressed even then, but revisiting it as an adult solidified how well the film’s themes and message resonated with Kabuki traditions. They also praised Joe Hisaishi’s score, hoping this production will inspire a new wave of impactful “Super Kabuki” performances.
