The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are popular again, thanks to the success of the 2023 animated film, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem. The movie’s unique look and touching story were a hit with both viewers and critics, leading to plans for more content, including another animated movie and a spin-off TV show called Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Although that TV series was recently canceled, the Turtles remain popular with a thriving comic book series. Now, a new live-action project is in the works, but unfortunately, it means a different, previously anticipated project has been put on hold.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, producer Neal H. Moritz is in talks with Paramount Pictures to create a new series of live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movies. Moritz, known for his work with Original Films and producer Toby Ascher, previously launched the successful Sonic the Hedgehog films. This project is part of a broader plan for the combined Paramount and Skydance Media to utilize fully-owned properties. The aim is to make a movie that appeals to a wide audience – men, women, and people of all ages – similar to the family-friendly success of Sonic.
The report also sadly confirms that the live-action movie based on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin has been cancelled. This film was going to be based on the popular comic book series of the same name, which tells a dark story about the last surviving Ninja Turtle seeking revenge in a futuristic New York City. It was planned as a mature, R-rated movie, but that doesn’t fit with the studio’s new focus on family-friendly content.
Can Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Work in Live-Action?
As a lifelong movie fan, I’ve always had a soft spot for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The first live-action movie back in 1990 was a total blast – seriously, the effects by Jim Henson’s team were amazing, and it struck a great balance between the darker comic book roots and the fun of the cartoon. It’s still a classic, and it was cool to see it back in theaters for its 35th anniversary! But honestly, the two sequels that came out shortly after didn’t quite live up to the original, and the live-action Turtles pretty much disappeared for a long time after that.
Recent live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movies haven’t fared as well. The 2014 film and its 2016 sequel, Out of the Shadows, produced by Michael Bay, received mostly negative reviews and disappointed fans. While the first movie made money, the second one didn’t perform well, ending plans for a third film. Critics felt these movies lacked originality and didn’t capture the special spirit of the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
The positive reception to Mutant Mayhem demonstrates how well animation suits the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise. Animation allows for a unique visual style and energetic feel that would be hard to achieve with live-action, particularly with characters like giant, talking turtles. The film’s animation was a major part of what made it work, and a live-action or CGI-heavy version might have felt strange or unnatural. Live-action adaptations have always struggled to balance the action with the Turtles’ inherent humor, but animation seems to handle that balance perfectly.
The next Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie, following Mutant Mayhem, will come out on September 17, 2027.
