Although we don’t know exactly when the next Xbox and PlayStation 6 will be released, recent reports suggest delays are possible. The current pace of new console releases isn’t necessarily a bad thing, considering the challenges with hardware. There’s debate about when the next console generation will truly begin, with some pointing to the Nintendo Switch 2 as the starting point. However, despite the Switch 2’s success, it’s not as powerful as the new consoles Microsoft and Sony are working on.
Okay, so from what I’ve been reading, don’t expect the next Xbox or PlayStation anytime soon – we’re probably looking at 2027 or 2028 at the earliest. Honestly, I think that’s a good thing. The current consoles, especially with the PS5 Pro coming out, are already pretty powerful, and it feels like there isn’t a huge leap possible with today’s tech. Plus, consoles used to get cheaper over time, but now they’re actually getting more expensive! With things like tariffs driving up costs, it makes sense to hold off on new hardware until things stabilize. A rushed launch would probably mean a more expensive console, and nobody wants that.
A Next-Generation Console Delay Would Benefit the Industry

As a PC builder, I’ve been really feeling the pinch of rising costs lately, and it’s mostly down to RAM. It’s gotten so expensive, way faster than general inflation. It’s not just us PC folks either – I’m hearing console manufacturers are struggling with it too. Seriously, the price of RAM has more than tripled in the last few months! The reason? AI. It seems crazy that something like chatting with ChatGPT needs so much memory, but it does. It’s a lot like what happened with Bitcoin mining and graphics cards – huge demand drives up the price, and right now, that’s happening with RAM.
Video game consoles have always been expensive, historically costing around $200 to $400 when adjusted for inflation. However, today’s consoles are even pricier – the PS5 Pro, for example, costs nearly $750, though less expensive options are available. Prices keep going up, and both Sony and Microsoft have raised their console prices several times recently. This trend is expected to continue, which is why both companies are thinking about postponing the release of their next generation of consoles to make them more affordable for more people.
As a gamer, I actually think a delay to the new consoles could be a good thing. It feels like games are taking so long to make these days that some companies are just skipping making them for older consoles altogether! That means we, as fans, are basically forced to buy new hardware just to play the latest titles, and that makes it harder to afford all the games we want. If they held off on the new consoles for a bit, developers could catch up and still make games for the systems we already have, which would be awesome for everyone.
Delaying the Next Console Generation Could Save Gamers Money

While new gaming consoles get a lot of attention, the heart of the industry is always the games themselves. When a console launches too quickly, game developers need time to create titles for it, which can be annoying for players. And if the new console can’t play older games, it limits options for those who spend a lot of money upgrading. Delays are never ideal, but it’s better for the industry to postpone a launch if problems with cost or compatibility make it difficult for players to move to the next generation.
So, I’m hearing talk about a possible delay for the next generation of consoles, and honestly, I’m curious what everyone else thinks! What’s your take on it? Let’s chat about it over on the ComicBook Forum – come share your opinions!
